Interesting, and it puts a lie to the publisher's claims that they need to charge more for ebooks because of all the costs involved in design, editing and typesetting.

This is based on the Feb 28 NYT article, which 'puts a lie' to the claims that removal of physical costs will lead to large savings, since printing, storage and shipping only represent 12.5% of the cost of a typical hardback.

The real problem here is the estimate that publishers only spend 50c designing, editing and typesetting an ebook compared to 80c for a physical one. This shows in the shoddy production values of many ebooks and is unacceptable.

Well duh! Someone has finally quantified something that has been intuitively obvious for years.

Physical costs clearly are a much larger chunk of the actual costs of books than designing, editing and typesetting, which is what they've been telling us, so yes, it's a lie.

Thanks for posting that. It is long long overdue IMO, but its nice to actually see hard numbers. Would also like to see breakdown between Hard cover and mass market paperback.

Makes you realize that if they wanted to Publishers could very easily reduce even new ebook costs well below where they are now. Eventually leading to ebook backlist prices of being down to a dollar or 2, where they should be.
