Here's a 'Why Write' I just ran across...maybe the opposite of the article that started this thread, maybe it will cancel itself out. LOL!

Kenny, I think your definition probably works for "literature", but I think Harry's summary, quoted above, is the only viable definition for "great literature". Striving doesn't make it so, as much as we might like to hope that it did.

She makes no mention of writing for an income (in that link anyway). So maybe there is no need for copyright protection - writers will write regardless .

I know of a book that was read by millions. The literary folks had a field day with it. They complained of bad grammar etc. The problem was not with the grammar. Every sentence was flawless. The problem was the writing was very simplistic. It was very easy reading and the story itself flowed very well. It was read by millions and made into a movie.
I'm puzzled why you wouldn't name "a book that was read by millions." It would give your assertions a lot more weight.

The infantilization of low-brow fiction pretending to be literature and read by millions might possibly include the Harry Potter books.

I don't think that they do "claim" to be literature. They are, though - to my mind at least - cracking good reads. Not every enjoyable book has to be "literature"; there's nothing wrong with reading purely for enjoyment!

1. Why he was getting bad reviews.
2. Why he wasn't making many sales.
3. Why 90% of his sold books were being returned.
I am minded of the letter Robert Heinlein sent to the authors of a famous Hugo/Nebula award winning book, after reading the first draft.

Once you've completed the first draft, Start from the beginning and then check the grammar, spelling and then cut out every extra word you can. The start all over from the beginning and cut again. (This would fix the typos along the way.)

Luckily, there is a before/after pulp novel I can recommend to see how this works. The before is in the US public domain, and is on Project Gutenberg. The after was rewritten in 1958, and is considered the "proper" version of the story.

It is the original Space Opera, The Skylark of Space", by E.E.Smith. The first version was 300 pages, the last was 180 pages. Not one scene was cut.

It's not enough to write, you have to ruthlessly "tighten" any story, if you want to sell. . .

If you mean "Fifty Shades of Grey", then say so. Not that it particularly matters; there are dozens of books I can think of off the top of my head that one could say exactly the same about.

From what I've read about the 50 Shades series, it's a dangerous set of books.

No, because it is FICTION. If it was a how to guide, you would be totally and completely correct.
