Nesbit, Edith: The Lark. v1. 02 Nov 2015

The Lark by Edith Nesbit 1858–1924)

First published 1922. The text of this book is in the public domain in countries where copyright is “Life+70” or less, and in the USA.

-----------
Edith Nesbit Bland, prolific English author and poet, is best known for her large body of innovative fantasy writings for and about children, such as the Psammead trilogy, "The Enchanted Castle," and "The Railway Children." She also wrote for adults, publishing more than a dozen novels and numerous short stories.

"The Lark," Nesbit’s final novel, tells of two young unmarried women struggling to maintain their financial independence by operating a boarding house. This lighthearted story is said to be inspired by Nesbit’s own attempts to make her large old house pay its own way. Although it is not "realistic" (unlikely coincidences abound), this is an amusing tale, populated with entertaining characters. As Jane frequently informs Lucilla, “This is going to be a lark.”

-----------
Text was obtained from archive.org scan of the 1922 first edition from Hutchinson & Co., London. Punctuation, diacritics, and italics are formatted; OCR errors (mostly?) corrected; some spelling and punctuation modernized / standardized. Chapter heads are cross-linked to in-line Table of Contents. Embedded fonts for drop-caps and small-caps.

-----------
Something to cheer you up on a dreary November evening
