Canada, China tops piracy watch list

US legislators condemned Canada, China, Mexico, Russia and Spain for failing to crack down on piracy of movies, music, videogames and other copyrighted works.

Theft of intellectual property in the five nations was at "alarming levels," the Congressional International Anti-Piracy Caucus said, placing them at the top of the "2010 International Piracy Watch List" for the second year in a row.

The caucus said Canada is a "leading host" of illegal file-sharing sites and its "enforcement record continues to fall short of what should be expected of our neighbor and largest trading partner."

"At one point in 2009, five of the world's top 10 illegitimate 'bittorrent' sites were registered, located, or operated out of Canada," it said.

Here's to hoping they won't bend over to U.S. pressure on this matter!

Politics, unfair picking on Canada to try to force them to adopt US laws. Just look at the buzz words, theft alarming illegal. This list China and ignore the rest of that region where I wish you good luck finding actual licensed DVDs. If they really cared about copying rather than control Canada wouldn't even make the list.

Considering that Canadian based musicians and songwriters are in the middle of a suit against the music industry for not paying royalties for hundreds of thousands of songs!

Wording like that (theft, property, alarming) is usually the hallmark of corporate and sock puppet lobbyists, not self-respecting lawyers... Oh, and picking on Canada? She'll live, but it's just ridiculous.

This was 'news' a couple of months ago, and it is interesting that is resurfaces just as a new copyright bill is supposed to be introduced in the Canadian Parliament.

Some weeks ago, Michael Geist wrote some columns rebutting these claims; some of his data was provided by the Business Software Alliance:

Business Software Alliance: Canada A World Leader in Reducing Infringement

Piracy Haven Label Case of Rhetoric Over Reality

Remember: "Not everything a politician says is the truth --- (nor most of the rest of us)."
