But also, what were people in the 1920s and earlier looking for in a short story? "The New Yorker story," in which not a lot happens, is a recent development. So does that mean that older stories were more likely to be "imaginative and speculative?" Or did the boring ones just fade away?

Thanks, Dazrin. The Lottery, on the other hand, is not in the public domain, as nothing by Shirley Jackson is. I agree that it is one of the best (and also seemingly ubiquitous) short stories ever written.

Shirley Jackson died in 1965, so her books will enter the public domain in "life+50" countries (eg Canada) on 1st Jan 2016, and in "life+70" countries on 1st Jan 2036. But not the US public domain for much longer.
