Because of the technical limitations of the LRF format html2lrf doesn't support the conversion of images inside links (<img> tags inside <a> tags)

Unhappy Oh.

So html won't do it, neither will lrf. And pdfs are a bit cumbersome, I give you that.

So what to do? Will there ever be a html2epub converter? Maybe there already is one that I missed...

Why is it that one question always leads to more questions?

Well I can always code a workaround that will extract and display the images outside <a> tags, but looking at your link, that's not the reason the images don't download, it's some funny URL redirection tricks the server plays that are causing wed2disk to not download the actual images.

EDIT: To be precise it's the use of the <base> tag that web2disk doesn't currently support

And I'm happy to say the next release of calibre will support the <base> tag

I just put up a quick update to fix a few issues under NT. If you tried under Firefox 3.0 to update and it failed, please try again, I didn't sign the rdf file properly and 3.0 is very picky about such things.

I'll probably not be able to work on this any until the weekend, feel free to post messages about any problems and I'll catch up when I can.

Just FYI, I played around during lunch trying to fix an annoying bug without success. Certain characters in the metadata is not being passed correctly to web2lrf. The most common seems to be right single quote characters like U+2019, but I've also seen it while trying to load international news sites.

If you experience this, usually you'll see an exception thrown while adding the file to calibre, recreate the file again but use the create method and manually set the title. I'll keep poking on this as time permits and see if I can come up with a reliable solution.

OK, I couldn't let it go and my wife met a friend for dinner, so I was able to fix the issue regarding unicode characters in the title and author. I haven't yet fixed it in other fields but will with next release. This release is 0.3.3.

Now I'm off for a beer.

Feature request

Dear beowulf573,

how about a "convert selected text" feature?

In FF 3 (RC 2) it is possible to select parts of a website and have FF show the html source of just that selection. Maybe it would be possible to add a context menu for converting just that part into an eBook?

Cheers,

jo.

That's certainly something I can look at, but it won't be as quick as the initial version. I have some personal issues to attend to that will keep me busy through the weekend. After that I can see what can be done. Right now I'm not dealing with the contents of the site at all, I'm simply passing the URL and other parameters to web2lrf and letting it do it's magic.

To do the selection conversion, I'd have to save the selection to a temp file, add missing tags to create well formed html, and then run html2lrf on it. Not impossibly, but a bit more work than the initial version. I'll try to find a few hours this weekend to throw something together, but it may not be for a bit.

html2lrf is pretty tolerant of malformed HTML so you shouldn't have to work too hard to create a good HTML file

Exclamation filename problems

Hi,

I just noticed that files BookIt creates from chinese websites have broken filenames (see attatched pics). Metadata is OK, calibre displays the right names (screenshots taken from the finder and from calibres list of files in the library after importing them). Not the greatest images, but you'll get the idea.

Probably an encoding problem.

Thanks for giving some thought to my earlier suggestion! "convert selection" would really be a great feature.

Cheers,

jo.

The filename issue is because I wasn't sure at first what are valid characters to use in filenames. I wanted to be conservative at first. Now that the big stuff is out of the way I'll revisit it this weekend.

Awsome Plugin!!

Hi Beowulf,

The tool is great and works excellent!

I have a request. Right now you have a dialog box that opens to ask the user if he wishes to create an eBook. Can you change that dialog box to open up something similar to the "Meta-Data" page where the user can enter the data temporarily for that web site. Also if you could add the recursion level to that page.

BUGS NOTICED
-The & is saved as &amp;
-Complains about Calibe being open. ( I belive you fixed this issue on an update)
- I noticed the PROXY for FireFox is not used. It uses IE. I belive this is an issue with web2lrf but it would be nice of you could use FireFox's Proxy instead.
