Kobo Glo N613 how to replace screen?

Apologies if this is already covered somewhere, I've been searching for a while and can't find any detailed guides.

I've got a Kobo Glo N613 with a broken screen, I'm happy to order one from Aliexpress just for the experience of replacing it. I know it's not really cost effective but I'd like to learn how to do it.

I can't find a detailed guide on how to replace the screen, has anyone got some experience with this?

I found this teardown which is quite detailed but he doesn't go as far as replacing the screen: http://erkinson.altervista.org/en/ko...mento-memoria/

Found this guide which is for an Aura but it looks very similar to my Glo so I thin kit should be useful.

With the screen being pretty expensive I want to make sure it really is the problem before I buy a replacement.

I've never used a Kobo Glo before but I figured out the serial port and got a boot log off it. (I was very surprised there was no root password, is that normal?)

I'm pretty sure the screen is faulty but could someone with more experience check the boot log below and give me some advice?

This is not a job for the faint-hearted!

Got it torn apart and the screen off, you can clearly see the damage on the back of the screen. I made it worse taking the screen off but it was obviously already damaged.

The physical damage was not visible at all however, until I got the screen off. It manifested as lines on the screen in the damaged area and no response to touch.

Will be ordering a new screen (few weeks for delivery) and having fun installing it without breaking it...

Hi All,

Just installed my new screen within my Kobo Glo N613. used the manual dom123dom posted here.

Ordered the screen from Aliexpress, all costed around €17. used only a pocketknife and little screwdrivers.

removing the screen from the bracket was the hardest part.
My screen was already broken, so a crack more or less did not matter,

The new screen is a little smaller then the original one. in lenght like 2-3 mm in widht it's exactly the same.

All is working smooth, books are readable again so thank you dom123dom for pointing me in the right direction!!!

Interesting!

Yes I saw they have the screens on AliExpress. Maybe I'll give it a try just for fun...

Do you remember which seller you bought from on AliExpress? There seem to be a few selling the same unit, but customer reviews are.....variable.

Okay, new screen ordered. I'll report back in a month or so once it's arrived on my progress in fitting it...

I just broke my screen today. Thankfully this was my replacement kobo I bought a month ago after I lost my original one. I since found that original one but now this one is broken!

Did the screen look identical to you visually HerbieNL? Aside from the dimensions being a touch off, would you say the contrast/sharpness of image was bang on?

Thanks for your time regardless!

Hi Gergith,

And again, a week after the reaction, I get an email with there is a reaction to your post..

But for your question, yes I think the contrast and sharpness is bang on. Like you I already bought a new one, but the repaired one is now heavily used by my 2 sons (10 and 11)and like McDonalds there loving it . I'm very happy with the replacement screen (aside of the money difference in buying a new lcd screen in Holland or in China).

Hope I could help with your decission

Touch?

Hi there! My screen most likely is dead to. I was just wondering if the screens you ordered do actually have touch function? I see some people responding on aliexpress telling they have not. Or am I checking the wrong advertisements?
Thanks
