I've decided to purchase The Alchemy of Happiness which is a two volume work by the ancient Sufi scholar Al-Ghazali. Alas, it isn't available as an e-book so I'll have to purchase it as a massive p-book volume. Since the books look pretty big, I'll likely only be able to read it at home. Well, at least it will look nice next to all the other volumes in our library.

I've wanted to read The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York by Robert Caro for ages, but there's no way I'm hefting those 1336 pages. His four-volume biography of LBJ is available, however, so I'm hopeful that eventually it'll happen.

I have the Lord of the Rings series physically, but I've been meaning to buy them as eBooks. Or some nicely formatted and annotated color PDF files.

My Kindle cost me $35 including shipping, $29 without; and yes, it was brand new from Amazon. I take advantage of lots of ebook sales, discounts, and deals.

I've managed a bookstore in Canada, I know the cost of reading in the Great White North. Trust me, going Kindle saved me money.

My goal is to replicate my entire paper library, as I tend to be a pretty heavy re-reader. Thankfully, many series I've been waiting on have at last come available in the last year or so. I'm still waiting for a few standalone backlist novels, (Sharon Shinn's Heart of Gold comes to mind first) and as someone else mentioned recently, Anne McCaffrey's Harper Hall trilogy (and The Rowan, for that matter!) are for some reason still not available in the US. I may have to try the UK route for that one!

A while back Todd McCaffrey mentioned the US release of the Harper Hall books being one of the most commonly asked questions he gets. Earlier this year he said it was being worked on and was out of his hands. Something about the US contract being redone to include ebook rights. Of course that was quite a while ago so who knows. I too want them, my paper copies have seen many re-readings and are very well used.

I had no idea they weren't available until I had a craving to reread them about a month back. I'll admit, I was a bit taken aback to find they weren't around! I'm not in a situation where I can quickly put my hands on my paper copies, so it was pretty disappointing to realize that I wasn't going to be able to read them again for some time. Hopefully he can get it straightened out soon.

Buy them from Amazon UK - it's not difficult.

Don't you need a different credit card and email address to get a second Amazon account in a different country? Wouldn't you need a bank account in that country to do that?

I've considered that for some authors like Eddings and McCaffrey but thought I might give the publishers or whoever inherited the book rights another year.

I found it to not be all that easy. I've followed the directions others gave in another thread and it didn't work for me.

Some books actually cannot be appreciated fully without a few readings, honestly.

I only have 2 and thanks to Darkscribe, I'm going to get them OCr'd this year so that I can read them. They are "The Mouse That Roared" by Leonard Wibberly, Cyrion by Tanith Lee. Everything else I would have wanted has been gradually coming into ebook form (such as Eric Frank Russell).

Oh, yes, I haven't been able to find the Harper Hall series (Anne McCaffrey) either in ebook. It's listed, but not for sale. My sister prefers to read. I already have them in audiobook at Audible. I thought it might be available as an omnibus, but no such luck yet.

BTW, for those who are buying the original Pern series, buy the individual books. The Omnibus off the first 3 books was edited for the YA market and I'm sure an ebook version would be no different.

It depends on your credit card. None of mine work, but other people have been successful.
