Gameboy screen

What's the type of screen used for 1st generation of gameboy?

I know it's a type of LCD, but it's more pixel than digital alarm clock. But there's no light.

I think it can be a type of screen for eReader, there's no light, and it's durable.

And am thinking about combining this type of screen for school use, in replace of text book, save money and be green. Anyhow, just feeling interested in sharing this idea.

I thought there was a light behind the screen, you can see it on the edges?

You sure that's the really~really first generation of gameboy?

Coz I got one it doesn't have any light. In fact, they were selling accessories such as light frame to be put on the gameboy, so player can play the game in the dark.

And STN LCD, it's basically what you'd expect -- a low-resolution, low-power, high-latency (aka, blurry) LCD panel. But for 1989 it was pretty good.

And no, the original Gameboy never had a light screen. Nor did the Gameboy Color, or even the first revision of the Gameboy Advance. It wasn't until the Gameboy Advance SP that Nintendo finally put a backlit screen in a Gameboy device. Of course there were plenty of clip-on lights for all of the different models that worked to various degrees.

Nostalgia. Ok, maybe not so much, but this does remind me of the "old" days.

I remember the days before ereaders were available, and I was eagerly following rumors. Would the game boy (and advance and Ds) make good ereaders? What about palm devices? Would this eink stuff ever go from the lab to production (truthfully, it took quite some time).

God, I remember having one of those clip on lights for the original Gameboy (I still have the Gameboy). That thing was a piece of garbage.

Nope. Original Gameboy was released in '89 In '98 they released a Gameboy Light, but it was pretty much Japan only, and very rare. The original GBA was front lit, and the GBASP was backlit.

'89 Gameboy, Gameboy Pocket, Gameboy Color were not lit at all, being reflective only LCDs.
