Actually, it gets kind of weird for obscure authors where one simply has no clue when they died and there is little, if any, biographical info available online. Likewise for illustrators.

Date of publication would make it far easier to tell when a work becomes public domain in such instances.

You'll get no argument from me there. But that's not what the quoted comment was referring to at all.

All out of copyright in the EU in 2022, but their first together, The Seven Sleepers (1925) will be out of copyright in the USA in 2021.

Also sf and pulp writer H Bedford Jones (d 1949), therefore PD 2020; and western writer Ernest Haycox (d 1950), PD 2021.

Both are PD in Australia.

Spellbound was a good movie. I had no idea it was based on a book. Or at least I had forgotten it was. Amazon has it up for sale in Kindle.

Do any of the folks on this thread, who seem to know a lot about public domain, know what is the status of Canada and life-plus-50 vs life-plus-70 - especially given the slow-mo on ratifying NAFTA 2.0 and the CPTPP instead of the TPP? I have a business trip to Canada in late spring, and have quite been looking forward to visits to FadedPage and PG Canada while I am there.

Any thoughts on whether the situation will change before then?

In respect of Canada, there is a long way to go: treaties have to be ratified by Parliament, etc.

It can't change between now (I'm writing this on 2 January), and this Spring, because new books only enter the public domain on 1 January. The proposed move to Life + 70 is not retroactive.

As to whether USMCA -- the agreement requiring Canada to go to Life + 70 in the near future, while the U.S. continues to put it off for decades -- will be ratified -- it seems probable

I'm not sure if the first of the 20 missed Canadian public domain days would be 1 January 2020 or, maybe, 1 January 2021. Does anyone know?

Love these...although I'd call the main three (The Mouse in the Mountain, Sally's in the Alley, and Oh, Murderer Mine) books more than novellas. These are on my read-alone-because-I-may-laugh-out-loud list.

NZ is still Life+50 with no will to change.

The TPP definitely did collapse when the USA withdrew and was expected die. However, around 4 or 5 months later the remaining countries, led by Japan, agreed to resurrect it as what later became the CPTPP.

During the TPP negotiations the NZ Government had analyzed the expected economic impact of all the TPP trade effects on the country among which extending copyright to +70 had a negative impact on the economy.

When the CPTPP was negotiated around 20 or so requirements that the USA alone had demanded be in the TPP, one of which was that all countries become Life+70 countries, were no longer relevant. That (supported by the analysis showing a negative impact on the economy of +70) meant that NZ remains a +50 country.
