As the OP, I am pleased that the question seems to have been comprehensively answered. The relevant responses all suggest it's simply an aesthetic preference, not a functionality issue. |

Yes...and if that's important to you, then it's great that there are devices and fonts that use them.
For me, I would rather have no ligatures used, as I think it looks better when I can see all elements of each letter. Shari |

To be honest, you don't notice. You just read.

This is usually true. However, now that I know what to look for, it's distracting me. Seriously...I find myself looking for this in newspapers, magazines, signs, etc. I know that it will stop being a distraction soon, but for now, it's bothering me quite a bit.
I'm aware that this makes me sound a little obsessive, and I probably am. I've learned to live with it over my 50+ years, though. Shari |

Of the mass market books I've checked, I'm at a 50/50 for having ligatures and not having them. I excluded books from the same publisher and the same author for those who had changed publisher (just in case they had some pull which I doubt but eh).
From what I saw, if ligatures were in one book of a series they were in all of them. I've also discovered the reason I've a preference for smaller font sizes to get more words on the screen is likely due to my love of epic fantasy becasue boy do those books like using small sizes when compared to general fiction. |
