ASUS EEE Reader by Year End, Color, Touch Screen, £100

As reported by the Times, Asus plans a market entry by year end. In one version its expected to be a dual screen device.

I wonder if this is the long expected pixel qi device?

It'll be interesting to see what they come up with.

I don't know if it's going to be like the PixilQI, but if it is *and* they can bring it within the 100 British Pound price range, I think I'd buy one.

How much would it weigh with two screens? Key factor IMO.

Interesting.

One problem with the article (other than the lack of detail)

Quote:
So far, the more sophisticated devices have taken some time to reach Britain. Amazon’s Kindle and the Sony Daily Edition, for example, both of which contain a 3G mobile-phone Sim card, are on sale in the US but not here.
The Daily Edition is not on sale anywhere yet.

It says full color, so it can't be eInk.. and also it must be backlit. There are no color non-transmissive screens commercially available for anywhere near that price. I don't see how the device described would be qualitatively better for reading than any old LCD monitor or laptop display. And battery life would be an issue.

If they are monochrome eInk, two displays would alone cost over 60 pounds wholesale. That doesn't sound right either.

Basically I think this is a 7" class netbook with an extra display instead of a keyboard.

I guess with the success of their netbooks they started looking at other related markets.. They have the hardware skills (easily) and software skills (linux distros run on ANYTHING), so it might be a great open source device.

Probably not as shiny as a mac tablet might be but a lot cheaper and more open.

I very much doubt it will be eInk.

And actually it sounds alot like the fabled OLPC 2.... which I think was projected to come out some time in 2010.

Price should be all the reason you need. Especially if you're talking about color, which if history tells us anything will likely be even more expensive than the existing displays (initially).

Weren't the Pixel Qi screens going to support both color and touch?

The Pixel Qi technology can handle color, albeit only in its transmissive mode.

Last I heard integrated touch was something they were looking into. Of course you could always use an existing touch technology... though at this price the only option would likely be [brightness sapping] resistive membranes.

Eh... Give me a shipping product to evaluate, not a vague press release. It's easy to promise, hard to deliver....
