Butterfly screen

Qualcomm is devoloping a screentechnology, called IMOD, that is inspired by butterflywings. Like E-Ink it won't drain power when a still image is shown but it can show video as well! And color is default. And yes it will be good for the eyes like E-Ink. Very intressting.
It is still being developed but a prototype was shown at Society for Information Displays conferens in San Diego.

More info here:
http://www.qualcomm.com/technology/imod/index.html
and a PDF with among other things a small text where they compare E-Ink (called Electrophoretic Display) and IMOD

Thanks for the post. I hadn't seen this technology before. It looks very promising. They claim a very fast response time / refresh and the temperature range is -30C to +70C.

This display tech has potential. The best thing I like about it is color in full motion. I see drawbacks though. I have no idea how they think this is similar to lcd manufacture. Oled might not be lcd tech but it comes from a even more mature tech, ink jet printing. A problem I see if fragility. You have millions of moving parts, something is going to break. Plus the making the millions of moving part that all have to be flawless. This is no small feat. If these problems can be overcome and I do think they will, I look forward to these but for now, I am going with solid state displays.

Also, note that each pixel is either on or off. There is no half state. The proposal appears to be to have each addressable pixel divided into many sub-pixels, and dither spatially. This may well work, but means that there are even more moving parts.

Since they use interference to select the colour, I would expect that the colour you see is dependent on the angle you view at, with lower angles leading to colours getting redder - simply because the effective distance between the plates gets longer away from perpendicular. But LCDs do that to some degree too, so maybe it isn't a problem...

I was thinking the same thing especially when they compare the technology to a peacock feather. They might get colour but it would be difficult to get true colour from every angle. It might not work well for televisions but it might work well for electronic books where the exact colour isn't as important.

Unless maybe there's a diffuser above each pixel?

How would these screens display if were for instance at an angle to them? Like the older LCDs?

They make the following claim. --> "Additional advantages of IMOD technology compared to current LCD displays include a wider, more symmetric viewing angle, faster video response and a larger operational temperature range."

This is obviously a very one sided comparison coming from vendor. It will be interesting to see independent reviews.

Well with claims like that what are they waiting for? I can wait an other year to change that obsolete 3 year old TV!
