Amazon.co.uk takes 21% of entertainment market (thanks to strong sales of Kindle)

http://www.thebookseller.com/news/am...nt-market.html

Quote:
E-book sales have helped Amazon to gain a 21.1% share of the entertainment market in the UK, which is more than Asda and Tesco combined, figures from consumer insight company Kantar Worldpanel have shown.

The online retailer has upped its market share by 3.2% in the 12 weeks to 10th June in comparison to last year, which analysts have attributed to strong sales of Kindle e-readers.
I'm guessing that entertainment includes digital and physical version of

Movies
Music
Books
Games

(what else am I missing)?

BREAKDOWN:

Amazon: 21.1%
Tesco: 10.7%
Itunes: 8.8%
Asda: 8.3%
Sainsbury’s: 5.3%
Play.com: 4%

Total of these 6 companies: 58.2%

Well IF you want to believe the large corporations then maybe other 42% is made up of pirates
Why don't they bring back witch hunters and burn a few people at the stake for good measure, after all we are talking about £$money$£ here

In the Philippines,Indonesia as well as many other 3rd world country's, company's like Microsoft have government officials running around checking internet cafes to make sure they have legitimate software and police carrying out expensive anti piracy operations.Even though these same governments cant even manage to provide even basic services we take for granted in the west.

And these same governments are a strait as Elton John and have turned lining there own pockets into a art form. If you want a government job or need anything involving the government then you better have hand full of money waiting to pay off the local official/police man.

lol.

I think they are ranking "purchased entertainment" products (which don't count movies tickets or concert tickets etc....)

Here's something not at all relevant:

From the May 12, 2012 issue of Billboard

Top 10 US Music Accounts

Rank/Account/2011 Market Share/Type

1. iTunes 38.23%
2. Anderson 17.86% - stocks Walmart/Best Buy
3. Amazon 7.93%
4. Alliance 5.97% - stocks Kmart and one stop stores, internet fulfillment
5. Target 5.45%
6. Trans World Entertainment 1.97% - owns FYE record stores
7. Rhapsody 1.97%
8. Super D 1.66% - online cd store
9. Vevo 1.15%
10. Microsoft 1.09% - Zune, XBox, MSN

p.s. worldwide, Spotify is now #2 source of revenue for the music labels. Check out its amazing growth rate.

Spotify Revenue:

2008: $0.612 million USD
2009: $18.1 million USD
2010: $99 million USD
2011: $236.4 million USD

A lot of US people buy blu-ray series and box sets from Amazon.co.uk as well. You can often save 75% over the US price even including the international shipping charge (£3.08). You just have to be sure the blu-ray is region free rather than region B locked.

A couple examples that I bought over the last couple years was the Alien Anthology UK price £16.65, US Price $89.99-$129.99. Bourne Trilogy UK £10.00, US price was $59.99.

VAT is removed from price when shipping to US as well.

2010: $99 million USD
2011: $236.4 million USD

Spotify Is Now The Second Biggest Source Of Revenue For Labels—Source

Quote:
The No. 1 revenue source for labels is Apple's iTunes.
iTunes paid approximately $3.2 billion to record labels in 2011, Business Insider Intelligence estimates.
The gap between Apple and Spotify remains extremely large, our source tells us.
"iTunes is way up here," our source said, gesturing up high, "and everyone else is way down here."
Itunes: $3.2 billion payment in 2011
Spotify: ~$600 million payment projection in 2012
