eReader on the verge of being discontinued? (Symbian first)

We have no way of authenticating whether or not this is true, but according to a PDA247 reader, eReader for Symbian may no longer be supported.

Quote:
I have stopped purchasing any more books at eReader, even though in the past I have bought dozens. The reason? When I asked them if they planned to upgrade their Symbian reader to support all the new S60 v3 devices coming out, they said they had no plans to do any further updates for Symbian devices.
If it's indeed eReader's plan to abandon the Symbian platform, this would be an extremely disturbing development, since, at least to my knowledge, there's no other software solution available to read e-books in encrypted eReader format. If you happen to be a loyal eReader customer with a Symbian device: dump your phone and get something real, like a Palm Treo, or abandon your personal bookshelf with all the eReader e-books you've purchased for "lifetime".

Yet another example why closed DRM in the long run isn't going to help anyone, last and least, the customer.

Unhappy

Amusingly the reader involved wrote that on here https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6794 and it was me, with the contents of an email I had got from ereader.com themselves which have got a bit garbled in the cut and paste between sites, here's what I got from them when asking about them supporting the Nokia N80 symbian 3rd edition os: "Unfortunately, there are no current plans on supporting your device."
As you can see, that doesn't quite match what I said originally...

Something got wrong in the communication between you and Shaun (PDA247) and it's not the case that they stopped support for future Symbian devices?

I never talked to Shaun, all I did was post that comment I linked to saying that had no current plans to bring out a N80 compatible version. This could just be because they don't want to announce it yet for all I know, and they definitely didn't say they were stopping Symbian development (but if they are I'd expect 3rd edition device support is on their roadmap at least)

Well if it wasn't you who talked to Shaun, then someone else did, and that person claimed that his response from eReader was that support for future Symbian devices has been discontinued. Either this person wasn't telling the truth, or he received a different answer from eReader than you did.

Any more news about eReader?

I'm a heavy user of eReader and am a bit disappointed that they haven't provided more information about their future plans. Anybody hear anything new?

I sent an email a few weeks ago to eReader asking about support for the N80. This is the response I got back:

Quote:
Greetings from eReader.com.

At this time, there are no current plans in place for supporting any
more symbian devices then the ones listed on our website.

If you have any additional questions regarding this matter please
contact us and please include all previous correspondence in order to
better assist you.

Thank you for shopping at eReader.com.

Based on this, I'm done with eReader (for all future purchases) and I guess will move to MobiPocket (or something else, I haven't looked for another eBook provider for Symbian for a long time and not sure what else is out there). I've got a bunch of books I purchased from eReader that I'll have to read on an old Palm if I do decide to upgrade my phone. Too bad as I preferred the eReader software.
