Read this back in the day (1990, still have my battered paperback copy on my shelf) and thoroughly recommend it. Stoll does an excellent job of explaining how he (an astronomer) ended up becoming a systems administrator, what drew his attention to the hacker in the first place, and gives a detailed, engaging account of how he tracked the hacker from California to Germany through an Internet very different from what we're familiar with today.

If you do find Cookoo’s Egg interesting, you might also find “Soul of a New Machine” of interest. It’s Tracy Kidder’s non-fiction story of the development of a new microcomputer by a team in Data General during the 1970s.

I have read this book early this year and really enjoy it. I also like his Numberphile videos.

If you find the cyber crime genre interesting, another good one is "The Blue Nowhere" by Jeffery Deaver.
Here's the blurb about it from Deaver's website: https://www.jefferydeaver.com/novel/the-blue-nowhere/ I found it to be a good book. Recommended. |

I've been meaning to give this a look after going through a few newer computer espionage titles. This is always held up as the earliest example of "one of those". This isn't a first-person memoir and is very recent although if you like the tech side of things, I'd recommend "Sandworm" by Wired's Andy Greenberg. It's got the content and pacing of a good documentary while talking about some contemporary cyber-terrorism concepts.
