They certainly used the MobiPocket Java Reader on the iLiad, and my impression is that this is still the case on the DR1000S. I agree, though, that on the DR1000S they did a nice job of integrating the MOBI Reader and its dictionary function into their API. So on the DR1000S, but not the iLiad, the dictionaries can be used in PDFs and well as MOBIs.

It's not a Reader, it's a SDK (software development kit) from Mobipocket. iRex wrote the application (on both the iLiad and the DR1000), they just used an API library from Mobipocket.

Is this it?
http://tweakers.net/nieuws/61710/ire...-e-reader.html Not any more details (that's what I was hoping for), but yeah, they do say iRex confirmed that it won't be available in Europe. |

wow if they aren't releasing it in Europe, I guess I can forget about Canada...
unless they are releasing it to "North America" not the "United States". For once, I wish there was a quality ebook reader with wifi that you could get EVERYWHERE |

I don't know if you ever seen on the 505 a black pixel next to a white one, next to a black, and so the whole screen full.
The smallest particle is hardly perceivable with the naked eye. I need a magnifying glass to see it's smallest shape of a black dot on the screen! Don't tell me you are able to differentiate the pixels from 1 foot away from the device! That'd mean you have eagle's eyes, not humans... We are talking about the same resolution found on older computers with a 14" screen, only now condensed in a 6" screen! I can not tell, but only guess that a dot (at the end of a line) exists out of about 10 black pixels (you can see very faintly under a magnifying glass it has a star shape). I think the 166dpi resolution is pretty awesome! Also, I think if you compare color print (paper) to the e-ink screens, you'll have to multiply the resolution of the ebook reader with 3x, in order to have the same resolution as the b&w e-ink. (which is slightly less than 500dpi)... |

New IREX
I have a Kindle 1 which I gave to my wife when I bought an Iliad earlier this year. I LOVE the Iliad. I practice law and I use the Iliad to take notes in Court. I also transfer my oral arguments and closing statements in pdf format to the device and use it in Court. It is MUCH easier even than using a netbook. And no eyestrain!
I will put myself first in line for the new 8.1" design. I have stayed away from the DR1000 and the Kindle DX because they are just too big. But an 8.1" screen size coupled with the utility of the Iliad and the connectivity of the Kindle makes for a winner with me. BRING IT ON! |

If it were to be available here, in the country where the creaters live, it would have been a great contender fo rmy money. But, alas, they don't plan to release it in their own home country...

Just remember that we're dealing with second hand information and rumors right now. It may be that there are two different versions of the DR800 being planned (or even just two different firmwares, similar to how they have the Chinese version of the iLiad). One for the US and one for Europe, and the quote was specifically about the former. Sometimes it's hard to tell what a company really meant, and what a reporter may have been confused about. It would be out of character for iRex to release a US-only device. They haven't done that previously. |

Some of my conjecture:
1. Why sold only in the U.S? Because the new model is tied with certain book seller, just like the Kindle series only available in the U.S. The question is: who will be the book seller? The seller must be very ambitious, very competitive. I will think iRex as an ODM of the new model. We can't buy it from iRex directly. 2. No shell access avaialbe. Since the new model is tied with certain book seller, they won't like users hacking the device to expand readable book foramt. So, shell access will not be provided as iLiad. 3. File fomat that is readable on the new model will be very limited. At least, pdf will not be excluded. |
