changes in the library format

I'm using Calibre on two different computer on the same library. One computer is running windows the other linus. On linus I cannot update calibre version due to old version of ubuntu. Question: If I update the windows version to 7.x will I be able to continue on Linus with version 5.x? There will be any changes in the library format?
Thank you

You will need to update your Ubantu so you can run the same version of calibre. The database has changed in version 7 and you could have a problem with it.

If you use both calibre 5 and calibre 6 on the same library, any books you add using calibre 5 will not be automatically indexed for full text search, so you will periodically have to rebuild the index.
You really should update your version of Ubantu. Changes in the library may cause problems. Either you update your Ubantu or you stop using calibre with Linux.

"...I cannot update calibre version due to old version of ubuntu."

Do you mean the old version of Ubuntu won't support a newer version of Calibre? Or, do you mean the version of Calibre that the old version of Ubuntu installs from its repositories is old? If the latter, install Calibre directly from the Calibre downloads page (not from the Ubuntu repositories):

I suspect HARDWARE limitations.

Which is why the first question should always be:
WHY is it you can't upgrade the OS.
rather that telling them to upgrade the OS.

Support for a lot of older hardware has been removed (No drivers, No 32 bit processors...).

The current calibre won't run on a 32-bit OS.

I KNOW THAT. I have been hanging out here for a while

You keep telling people to upgrade their OS WITOUT KNOWING WHY they did not do that. (In some cases it IS just FUD )

I was just pointing out that calibre 7 cannot run on 32-bit in case the computer with Linux is a 32-bit processor.

According to my Google-fu, "Ubuntu 18.04 LTS reached the end of its standard, five-year maintenance window on May 31, 2023." So, if at all possible, I'd look into updating that to something newer.
