Rooting Tutorial for Boox Go 10.3

Has there been done any reasonably concise tutorial on rooting the Go 10.3? I see pages and pages of comments but is there a "one pager" somewhere?

Also, is there a custom rom? Can we completely remove Google play services?

I'm a computer guy but not an Android expert. Yes I've used adb and all that but where do I download the rom and other and has someone taken the time to donate instructions? Thank you.

The Go 10.3 is the same as everything else for rooting the standard way.
  • Get conversant with ADB
  • Get conversant with EDL
  • Use EDL to pull your stock boot image (save a copy for later)
  • Install Magisk, run, transform your stock boot image
  • Use EDL to flash the Magisk'ed boot image
Follow the directions for anything else here. Except use the right Firehose loader.

Completely remove anything Google require system partition modification. Disabling all of Google requires root.

There are no custom ROMs available. I'm not aware of any custom ROM for any E-Ink device. (If there are some, I'd be interested in knowing about them!)The closest I've ever seen to that was several years ago, when some devices from Onyx and Boyue used basically the same hardware and so it was possible to install a ROM from one to the other if you knew your way around system partitions.

You're going to have to explain to me what a "custom ROM" is, I guess. Do you mean something built completely from open source?

With rooting you can remove a lot of warts and disable most things. What is it that you're looking for?

I think that what the OP means by a custom ROM is alternative firmware that is designed for a certain Android device. One such example is LineageOS. One usually needs root and a custom recovery installed in order to install such a custom ROM.

I agree that rooting itself allows one to customize one's own firmware in many of the ways that a custom ROM would offer. My experience is that custom ROMs were more useful in years past but not always so useful now.

Ok, I'm a stick in the mud. I don't see the benefit from running a different OS or running straight Linux in a chroot under Termux. I always come back to "what do you want?" I don't want an OS, I want to do stuff.

Recently I've gotten heavily into using WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) to manipulate ext4 partitions mounted as loop. I can combine the benefits of Windows and Linux in one (Gnu) makefile.

I've got a jillion custom recoveries. They are easy if all you want is rooted ADB.

Ok that makes sense and much clearer now. I'll find a tutorial for any of the Boox devicies and follow that.

To answer the question about the ROM... let's say Boox is controlled by Chicom (I don't even know who owns them). If that were the case (and I don't know), then of course they have a kill switch built in or whatever other fun stuff. Like Baofang radios. Eat up kids, they're not stupid. I just want a book reader I can keep when the wars start, simple as that.

From wikipedia:
"As of 2022, Onyx International Inc. has declined[20] to release the source code with Linux kernel modifications licensed under the GNU General Public License version 2 in response to a written request by a user. The GPLv2 license states that if a modified version of a covered work (such as the Linux kernel) is released, the corresponding source code must also be released under GPLv2."

SO WHY spend $500+ on a device to keep for a decade of the Chicoms could shut it down? Really, that question, not another question, and Rockefeller-installed Chicoms are not "some country." This just makes me mad because it's the only Android device out there.

I don't think that you have to look far in the current landscape to find another computer company (of whatever country) that is just as intransigent.

I modify my Onyx as I see fit and keep them off the internet. That's a solution for me. Probably not for you.

Being on, or off the internet will have no (or little, then no) bearing on the concern I posited. Code is local, and poison pills don't require internet access.

And as far as another company, that's of course why I didn't buy another brand. I was just simply looking for Android on something "not Chinese Owned" (we know it all technically made there, different thing).
