Timothy Snyder, who is probably best known for his book, On Tyranny, and whose Yale online course, The Making of Modern Ukraine, my husband and I watched and learned a ton from, has a new book out, aptly named, On Freedom. It's on sale right now in the UK for £0.99 as part of today's Kindle Daily Deal for a few more hours, and matched at Kobo UK.

This month's University of Chicago Press free e-book is Sex on the Kitchen Table: The Romance of Plants and Your Food, by Norman C. Ellstrand. (It's an ePUB this time. Guess they got enough complaints?)
“The sex life of an avocado might seem anything but lurid. Geneticist Ellstrand, however, reveals it as a riot of romantic yearning and ‘sex switching.’ In his foray into the nexus of food, science, and plant reproduction, we enter that alternative universe in which olives and quinces are really vehicles for seeds, the tomato (the ‘love apple’ of yore) is self-fertile, and cultivated bananas are female-sterile. You’ll become reacquainted with the pistil, and wonder at the sugar beet’s rise ‘from a cascade of geopolitical incidents.’ Nutrition might never seem the same again.” — Nature Last edited by Sumanuil; 12-21-2024 at 02:09 AM. |

This month's University of Chicago Press free e-book is The Angel in the Marketplace: Adwoman Jean Wade Rindlaub and the Selling of America by Ellen Wayland-Smith.
“Wayland-Smith’s lively history tells the unusual story of pioneering adwoman Jean Wade Rindlaub, who climbed the ladder from secretary to executive in the mid-twentieth century. Wayland-Smith insightfully shows how Rindlaub touted motherhood, home, love, and Christian service as the cornerstones of the free market and free world, but how late in life she became a campaigner for social justice. The Angel in the Marketplace illuminates one woman’s journey from advocating traditional notions of women’s place and the benefits of capitalism to questioning the underlying message of the ads she produced.”— Kathy Peiss, author of Hope in a Jar: The Making of America’s Beauty Culture |

This month's University of Chicago Press free e-book is Being Somebody and Black Besides: An Untold Memoir of Midcentury Black Life by George B. Nesbitt.
“If his story comes off unremarkable, that’s because he presented himself as unremarkable. Which is an odd thing to write. To say Nesbitt was ordinary is to suggest guts, humility and decency are ordinary.” — The Chicago Tribune |
