In these collected tales, the writer takes us on chilling excursions to the borderland between the natural and the supernatural; with stories of the attempts of the dead to contact the living, and moving accounts of what might lie ahead in the afterlife.

The “grand master” M. R. James admired Oliphant's supernatural fiction, concluding that “the religious ghost story, as it may be called, was never done better than by Mrs. Oliphant in ‘The Open Door’ and ‘A Beleaguered City’”.

The short story “The Library Window” is, quite simply, a little masterpiece.

Margaret Oliphant Wilson Oliphant (born Margaret Oliphant Wilson) (4 April 1828 – 20 June 1897), was a Scottish novelist and historical writer. Her fictional works encompass “domestic realism, the historical novel and tales of the supernatural”. Highly prolific, she wrote more than 120 works, including novels, books of travel and description, histories, biographies, and volumes of literary criticism. Although interest in Oliphant’s work declined after her death, a revival has been apparent since the 1980’s. Her best novels, in particular the Carlingford series, have been compared to the work of Jane Austen and Anthony Trollope.
