The location where cover thumbnail files are stored is not accessible via USB on Colorsoft. It is different from other Kindle models in that way.

Too bad Amazon doesn't do what Sony did. Sony extracted the covers from the eBook.

Amazon does that for personal documents. That is why covers for those mostly work.

I remember covers not working for USB-transferred personal documents (one reason why people started to mark their sideloaded books with the EBOK tag), but that was many years ago.

That used to be the case but recent (last few years) kindle firmware supports personal document covers.

Do you remember when exactly that happened? Was it a hardware change or a software version?

At the moment I dont see a solution other than marking the books as PDOC which means you lose whispersync, etc. But I dont have access to this hardware so I cant be sure. It maybe that there is another filesystem location, that could work, but it seems unlikely to me. Over the years I have observed amazon gradually making it less and less convenient to side load. They do it in tiny incremental steps so no one gets too outraged, but the direction of travel is quite clear. I strongly encourage ditching amazon if owning your books and sideloading is important to you. Amazon very clearly want to force their users into their walled ecosystem.

I guess this was the plugboard issue described in another thread. The selected device no longer worked for the new Kindles.

Ahhh, thanks. I saw that other thread today and mentioned that the plugboard device for the new MTP Kindles must be MTP_DEVICE. I see you also were there and suggested "Any Device", which solved the OP's problem.
