Once I finally got my Coloursoft working (full saga in another thread) Calibre sent the cover art with the side loaded text. I can see color thumbnails of the book covers in the list of books I have loaded and if I go to the TOC I can bring up the full page color cover. I don't know whether Calibre sent epubs or mobis to the device tho.

Same here. I had no problems using calibre and seeing the cover art.

What did you do to get Calibre to do that?

I've managed to convert to KFX and send as a personal document rather than book and that worked.

Since your Colorsoft does not support ePub other than through the various flavours of Send to Kindle, calibre is either sending mobi (not recommended), KF8/azw3 or KFX format ebooks (depends on how you have calibre configured).

If I was faced with that choice I’d probably take the same approach as Amazon, as this will likely make black text pop out more on a light background, meaning a slightly better readability for graphic novels. But really I think it’s just a case of give some, take some.
You mean the KINDLE is missing details. There are a lot of details missing on the Kindle.

Think is, this choice is rubbish. It makes (IMHO) the Kindle useless for color.

I could only find that supposed Amazon quote on Android Authority, here, and in a post on the Kindle forum. But nobody has linked to the statement from Amazon.

So we have no idea if it is valid or not.

I tested it myself on the Paperwhite 2024 using Calibre.

Regarding Send to Kindle, Amazon doesn't give a rat's ass what you send.

Our corporate overlord is still benevolent.
Did you sidelode ebooks that calibre has converted into .azw3 ? Here I get an error message " ERROR. If you bought this book at Amazon, remove it and download it again". The books were converted by calibre 7.12

I found the answer myself. You have to convert the ebookt to kfx and not to azw3. That works

Why do KF8 eBooks not work on a 2024 Kindle?

Dual-format MOBI (such as what Gutenberg offers) also does not work (on my Colorsoft). SDR folder is created, indexing completes, but it will not open. (moreover Remove download does not do anything: the file and sdr folder remain).

Yet Product Details state:
Quote:
Kindle Format 8 (AZW3), Kindle (AZW), TXT, PDF, unprotected MOBI, PRC natively
You would think someone would be checking this (to make sure the Product Details are accurate or that Remove download worked). But this is Amazon.

I am seeing something a bit different.

I picked a recently added book from Project Gutenberg (The old house, and other stories by Blanche Sellers Ortmann) for testing. It shows two Kindle formats: Kindle and older Kindles. The first is KF8 format with a .mobi extension. The second is MOBI V6. Both show that they were created using calibre version 4.17.0. Neither is dual-format.

The MOBI 6 file works properly when sideloaded to the "documents" folder of my Colorsoft via USB/MTP.

However doing the same with the KF8 file pops up the Unable to Open Item dialog. But this happens because the non-working file as delivered by Project Gutenberg has the wrong file extension for its format. Changing the extension of the KF8 file from .mobi to .azw3 allows it to function properly on my Colorsoft. I experience the same behavior with this file on a Kindle Paperwhite.

I could not duplicate this. After it failed to open I was able to remove the book using the Remove Download choice from the device's UI.

As another test I downloaded the EPUB3 version of the same book from PG and converted it into an actual dual-format MOBI file using Kindle Previewer 3. Once sideloaded that functioned properly on my Colorsoft.

What happens if you download a KF8 eBook from Amazon via WiFi to your Kindle? Is it even possible to find such an eBook?

Thanks.

I was perhaps misinterpreting post #53 which said they got error trying to open a book converted to AZW3 by calibre. And then I thought I reproduced it with AZW3 that was not converted but just had DRM removed (but checked today and those work fine). And Gutenberg with its weird Kindle offerings.

I'll re-check the failure to Remove after failure. I was recovering from a long drive and multi tasking (unpacking, eating, etc) and might have missed a step in there.
