Amazon Announces Kindle Colorsoft

Ran into this item which, to me, was rather interesting.

Eric Saarnio, vice president of Amazon Devices International, said that not only had sales of the Kindle risen in recent years, but more first-time buyers were among that number.

“Customers love Kindle and are reading on their devices more than ever – global sales last year hit their highest in a decade with the majority of purchases by first-time Kindle owners,” he said.

One of the articles I saw showed the number of page turns per month for Kindle Unlimited, it was a very large number. I do wish they had a Kindle App vs e-ink Kindle breakdown for that though.

And that's probably why we aren't going to see another Oasis again. Or physical buttons. Customers clearly don't want them!

That's actually surprising to me. I'd expect dedicated eReaders to be a relatively dying market.
Like, I'd expect the total number of dedicated eReaders sold by the entire industry in 2023 to be less than Amazon alone sold in 2013.

The rise of BookTok and influencers promoting dedicated ereaders shouldn't be underestimated. Even the trend of putting stickers on the back, or between the device and a clear cover, is super popular. They're making reading on a dedicated device look like a fun and personalizable thing vs just using your phone. I'm guessing that's why Amazon has promoted a clear case on their basic Kindle page up now.

I agree. The number of posts I see on Reddit about "look at these stickers on my Kindle!" is surprising to me.

I ran into that quote from an item on The Independent which seems strangely similar to the item on Yahoo.

Personally, I thought these were done from an Amazon press release given the identical headlines and most of the article. A Google search on the first sentence popped up about multiple pages with strangely similar content.

Gallery 3 doesn't have B&W. It's only color. There are no black ink particles in it. Black on the Gallery 3 is a really dark blue.

I think customers don't want to pay for them. The Oasis was a premium device. I'm curious if they sold the same model with and without page turn buttons, what would sell better?

I guess I'll have to manage without them, then. But I'd prefer not to.

As much as I like my original Oasis, both the buttons and its ergonomics, time marches on. It's a replay of why Blackberries no longer exist: overall people don't want physical keyboards on mobile phones.

I've held out long enough hoping Amazon would release a new Oasis, have officially given up hope, and ordered a Colorsoft. I've got two weeks to change my mind!

Not exactly. Several other brands still offer physical buttons on their ereaders.

They have kept the form factor the same as the new covers fit both 2022 and 2024 models.

The description calls it Kindle Scribe 1st generation - 2024 release. I think the internals are essentially the same, the only change is the cosmetic bezel redesign (which probably removes the 'gap' as well).

The new features will be coming to the existing Scribe as well. I'm not going to upgrade just for a new bezel.
