Kindle Firmware 5.17.1 imminent

I rolled the dice and upgraded my 11th Gen PW to 5.17.1, it did NOT change the device to MTP format, and the kindle is still available as a D&T target so for now at least D&T lives on.

Not officially but it’s been reported by multiple sources here and on Reddit that the new Paperwhite and Basic Kindles are not visible in the D&T menu, even when properly registered.

Just a heads up for when we there will be a FW with MTP switch: make a FULL backup just in case

I was playing around recently, jumping from 5.16.2 (non-MTP) to 5.16.9 (MTP) on Kindle Scribe and it wiped all user storage in the process.

I don't know whether this is intended, so just make a backup.

Fill up the space until less than 200 MB is left.

Unfortunately, filling up the space won't work for me because I mainly use sendtokindle (the only thing that made me stay with Amazon, apart from the atrocious availability and pricing of Kobos here). I've tried to fill up my Kindle before with just barely a gb left, and it made it horrendously slow.

And blocking stuff with my router is also a bust unless I buy a new one. The router my ISP provides is so bare bones it barely has any functions
And if I'm buying a new router, I might as well fork over cash to buy an overpriced Kobo device here.

The new PaperWhite had the 5.17.0 on arrival.
I remember receiving the e-mail concerning the 5.17.1 now... I wonder if I'll get this minor update.

Many users on Reddit are posting that the firmware has corrected lag issues and increased the speed of their Paperwhite 10's and some have reported same for their Oasis 3. I have not updated yet but interesting - seems like there was some bug causing slowness/lagging they may have corrected.

After reading all those reddit posts about lag decreasing, I decided to bit the bullet (seems like it also didn't change devices to MTP anyways), and my 10th gen basic's page turn speed is like significantly faster before this update. It was quite surprising really.

I've installed 5.17.1 on a PW5 and yes, the page turns have gotten faster. IMHO, with 5.17.1, I see no need to get a PW6 if you have a PW5.

They have probably finally revised their java virtual machine (called cvm) to not output a bunch of unnecessary logs since 2014
