a suggestion to improve the browser experience
The use of shortcuts (or hotkeys, or keyboard shortcuts, or whatever you want to call them) would greatly improve the browser experience .
For example : To change the way a web page is displayed on the Kindle : W : fit-to-width Alt + Q : 150% Alt + W : 200% Alt + E : 300% A : actual size When the width of a web page doesn't match the width of the Kindle's screen : L : move to the left side of the webpage R : move to the right side of the webpage T : move to the top of the webpage B : move to the bottom of the webpage To change the Screen Rotation : Alt + L : the keyboard on the left Alt + R : the keyboard on the right Alt + T : the keyboard at the top Alt + B : the keyboard at the bottom BTW, the 4 shortcuts to change the Screen Rotation are not only useful within the browser. They would be useful as global shortcuts . Last edited by AthenaAtDelphi; 10-07-2010 at 12:29 AM. |

I agree Amazon should make more use of the shortcuts (and document ALL of them not just some) however since certain ones are already taken (ie Alt+Q for the number 1, w=2 etc) perhaps shift+alt+q?
I'd also really like a shortcut to get to the browser from the homepage Not sure if you knew this but if you hold alt and use the up/down/left/right arrows it scrolls the page, might help a little in the mean time. Last edited by jphphotography; 10-07-2010 at 12:31 AM. Reason: Added scrolling tip |

So, a better suggestion would be : To change the way a web page is displayed on the Kindle : W : fit-to-width Shift + Q : 150% Shift + W : 200% Shift + E : 300% A : actual size Quote:
Well, sort of . At page 117 of the User's Guide : "One other way of accessing Web Browser is to type in a word anytime from Home or any book, blog, newspaper, personal document, or magazine you happen to be reading. When you begin typing, a search box will pop up at the bottom of the screen, and you can use the 5-way controller to navigate to the right and select" 'go to' . But you have to type in a valid address, otherwise you'll get an error message saying : "Your Kindle is unable to load the requested page." Not exactly a shortcut, but another way to access the browser is also mentioned on page 117 : "You can also enter a URL in the Search box from the Home page. Type the URL and use the 5-way to select "go to" and then press the 5-way." Last edited by AthenaAtDelphi; 10-07-2010 at 01:31 AM. |

I will try to remember to add these to the hotkeys hack. But it would always be preferred if Amazon itself added them, of course.

- type in a single letter (only 1) from Home or any book etc. ; - use the 5-way controller to navigate to the right and select 'go to' ; - select 'close' in the error window ("Your Kindle is unable to load the requested page.") ; - this will open the browser with the last visited website ; Last edited by AthenaAtDelphi; 10-08-2010 at 04:08 AM. |

1. use the Next Page and Previous Page buttons (only vertical scrolling) ; 2. use the up/down/left/right arrows ; 3. hold Alt, and use the up/down/left/right arrows ; Perhaps common knowledge for more experienced Kindle users, but I just found a fourth way : 4.1 hold Shift, and use the up/down/left/right arrows once ; 4.2 hold Shift, and hold the up/down/left/right arrows ; |
