B&N announces 1 million Ithing app downloads

This isn't all that important, but I thought someone might be interested.

I got a press release today in which Barnes and Noble announced the 1 millionth download for its two iPhone apps. That number includes both the eReader app and the B&N bookstore app. I wonder what the split is between the two apps?

Nate, it is important because if B&N finds that it sells millions of ebooks with eReader DRM, it will add reason for B&N to NOT abandon its own form of DRM babel.

But this didn't say anything about the number of books sold, so this news wasn't all that important.

Nate, if 1 million people download a application, it is reasonable to assume that some percentage -- even a small percentage such as 5% -- will actually use the application for its intended purpose, in this case to buy books. If 5% (50,000 people) purchase 1 book, that is still -- for ebooks -- a significant number. If 1% (10,000 people) buy 5 books, the numbers begin to climb.

B&N didn't release the numbers, but I wonder how many purchased Dan Brown's book with eReader DRM from all of the B&N stores (including Fictionwise). The larger the number, the more intransigent B&N may become over the eReader DRM, something I would like not to see happen.

Had the press release said that 50,000 downloads had occurred, I'd be less concerned, but 1 million downloads -- and none to dedicated ebook reading devices -- is worrisome (although not a sleep-losing proposition).

What you say is true, but that 1 million figure was for both apps, not just the eReader one. We don't know how many eReader apps have been downloaded.

I think you'd still have to call that a success. The more stories we have about the success of ebook related apps the more companies will offer them, so all good!
