I tend to take a run through the series about every ten years, once I've forgotten all the solutions. As a study of character evolution, I don't think it can be beaten. Good play-fair mysteries, too. Another love of mine, although little known, is Sara Woods's Antony Maitland books. Maitland is a British barrister who takes on 'hopeless' cases, and does the investigating himself. Very likeable, colorful characters and good mysteries. I have an autographed EQ book - it's the prize of my library. |

Might I suggest Lord Darcy by Randall Garrett? A blend of fantasy/alternate universe/detective fiction....

I have to put in a nod to the Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles series by Tess Gerritsen.
Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles 1. The Surgeon (2001) 2. The Apprentice (2002) 3. The Sinner (2003) 4. Body Double (2004) 5. Vanish (2005) 6. The Mephisto Club (2006) 7. Keeping the Dead (2008) 8. The Killing Place (2010) I've read the first 3 so far and they are excellent. The first one was given away as a freebie. That's how I got into Tess' books. |

I don't think anyone's mentioned Aurelio Zen (by Michael Dibden) or Arkady Renko (Michael Cruz Smith).
Apologies if they have and old age is getting the better of my eyesight! |

Love detective stories! Used to read them all the time.
Some of my favorite sleuths are Agatha Christie's Ms. Marple and Poirot, Martha Grimes' Richard Jury/Melrose Plant, Anne Perry's Thomas Pitt and Lawrence Sanders' Francis X. Delaney. |

One of my favorite detectives is Sonchai Jitpleecheep of the Royal Thai Police in a series of novels by John Burdett. I'm currently reading The Godfather of Kathmandu, the 4th and newest in the series that begins with Bangkok 8, and continues with Bangkok Tatoo and Bangkok Haunts.

John Sandford's Lucas Davenport series is my current favorite. I also get a kick out of Leslie Glass' Detective April Woo, although she's no longer writing the series. Of course Nero Wolf and Archie Goodwin got me started reading sleuth stories...years ago.
