Thumbs up Free (nook/Kindle/Kobo/iTunes) Geek Girl [Award-Win YA Teen Model Comedy Drama Novel]

Geek Girl by British author Holly Smale (Wikipedia), herself a former teen model before earning a Master's Degree from from Bristol University, is the 1st in her eponymous series of tween/YA comedic novels starring the titular socially misfit schoolgirl with geeky interests, who unexpectedly gets spotted by a modeling agent and thus dragged into the drama of the fashion world, whereupon Hilarity (and Back-Stabbing) Ensues™ as she tries to re-invent herself (and apparently in the process realizing that there are some things you just don't need to change for others, while other aspects could probably use a little working-on), free courtesy of publisher HarperCollins' decidedly namesmushed HarperCollinsChildren'sBooks imprint (anyone else getting ThunderCougarFalconBird vibes?)

This is the iTunes UK store's featured Free Book of the Week, and was awarded the 2014 Waterstones Children's Book Prize (Wikipedia) and the Leeds Award in the tween/teen categories, and also got shortlisted for the Roald Dahl Funny Prize, the Branford Boase Award, and was nominated for the Queen of Teen award, whatever that is, according to the extended blurb.

Currently free, probably just until Monday @ B&N UK, Amazon UK, iTunes UK, and Kobo (available to the UK, and this also seems to be free in Oceania when I spot-check regional iTunes & Amazon stores, but not elsewhere the EU or North America).

And this has been the (late!) selected 3rd (non-repeat… ish) ebook thread of the day.

Because it's encouraging to see more mainstream books aimed at the kiddies assuring them that you too can be geeky and cool and that eventual social popularity and personal happiness and having nerdy science-fact-based interests (and none of this "fake geek girl" crap where women are assumed to be just pretending to do things only to attract the menz ) are not necessarily mutually exclusive (provided you have potential supermodel looks, I guess, but baby steps in the positive messaging department are better than none).

And it's supposed to be a funny award-winning one, too, so

Enjoy!

Description
“My name is Harriet Manners, and I am a geek.”

Harriet Manners knows that a cat has 32 muscles in each ear, a “jiffy” lasts 1/100th of a second, and the average person laughs 15 times per day. She knows that bats always turn left when exiting a cave and that peanuts are one of the ingredients of dynamite.

But she doesn’t know why nobody at school seems to like her.

So when Harriet is spotted by a top model agent, she grabs the chance to reinvent herself. Even if it means stealing her best friend's dream, incurring the wrath of her arch enemy Alexa, and repeatedly humiliating herself in front of impossibly handsome model Nick. Even if it means lying to the people she loves.

Veering from one couture disaster to the next with the help of her overly enthusiastic father and her uber-geeky stalker, Toby, Harriet begins to realise that the world of fashion doesn't seem to like her any more than the real world did.

As her old life starts to fall apart, will Harriet be able to transform herself before she ruins everything?
