PW1 how to remove heat shield?

I have a PW1 which is very poorly, I think it's going to undergo eMMC replacement.

What's the best way to remove the heat shields?

I have access to soldering iron and heat gun, just never done it before and they look pretty firmly attached. Anyone got any experience with this and can offer some advice?

Got the heat shields off, it wasn't easy and it ain't pretty, parts of the PCB have ripped off but amazingly the thing still boots on the serial console.

The eMMC was under the last heat shield I removed, typical. I removed them using cutters and mini pliers, there must be a better way....I tried a soldering iron but it was hopeless, maybe a heat gun might have worked.

The eMMC is labelled MCIMX508CVK8B N78A BTKX1249C SNGPR

This part looks like the chip model:
MCIMX508CVK8B

It's way smaller than I expected, will definitely be a challenge to remove and put back.

The eMMC is under the longest heat shield, directly above the power button. I'll post a photo once I get somewhere to host one sorted out.

Here's a photo of the board with the location of the eMMC under a green box and another one with the heat shield removed.

It was very difficult to remove the heat shield, I had to brute force it with snips and pliers. You can see I damaged the board getting it off but it still boots.

I was able to remove the shields from my PW2 with a heat gun and some tweezers. The shields soaked up the heat nicely and quickly desoldered from the rest of the board. Just be careful not to bump any components while the board is hot or you could displace components and ruin everything.

Also the chip you labeled eMMC is the SoC. I think the eMMC is a SanDisk chip, not a Freescale chip

Thanks for the heat shield tip, I will know for next time, actually i still have some partial heat shields left so maybe I will try it.

I was expecting a Sandisk chip but there's isn't one under any of the shields so I thought probably this one.....I'll post a photo of the board so all the chips are visible.

Also, replacing your eMMC is going to be very difficult. It's BGA soldered to the board which makes removal pretty easy, but fitting a new chip almost impossible, especially if all you have is a heat gun. You might be able pull it off if you pick up a solder paste stencil for the eMMC chip and squeegee on some solder paste, but it's still going to take a bit of luck. You'd also have to jump through all kinds of hoops to get the Kindle's OS running again with the new eMMC.

A user on here by the name of zephray was able to pull it off though, here's a link to the post he made. I'm currently trying to upgrade my own PW2's storage to something in the range of 32GB to fit all my weeb comics.
