"See? It's right there. Just go past the seventeen rows of "Teen Paranormal Romance," turn left at the LEGO lab, go around the petting zoo, and it's right beside the ball pit."

"You can't miss it."

I don't think the Manga is going to save them. But, if they've got ball pits there may be hope!

Hey, now!
Two racks of Manga are better than one.
Now they can stock six series instead of three.

My store (when I worked for B&N) had two spinners for manga and about 45 linear feet of shelf space. About another 30 l.f. for graphic novels topped with 3 "waterfall fixtures" to feature titles. Plus about 10-15 monthly titles up on the magazine racks. No comic book shop by any means, but not too bad.

Each store's inventory will vary, of course.

What would be nice is for them to not only increase their in-store inventory and display space, but to diversify it. They are very heavily into the Big 2.

I totally get that. But in the end, they have to stock what sells. B&N's 'gift shop feeling' says more about their customers taste than it does about their desire to retreat from selling books.

Lottery tickets sell very well. Why don't they get into those?

We are approaching the point where we don't know what a B&N brick and mortar store is for. Are the coffee-shop denizens going to continue to hang out if the place continues to morph into a high-end toy store? Are the parents of legomaniacs going to feel comfortable right next to a giant manga display? And does ANYBODY shop in that over-priced CD / DVD section? Ever?

Seems to me that they need to focus.

As long as the can read all the free manga and magazines they want, while accessing free Wi-Fi? Yes.

That does seem like it would be the easiest section to dump.

That CD / DVD section could hold a LOT of the book inventory that has evaporated over the past few years. Have you noticed how small the science book section is in a B&N these days? It's pathetic.

I hate to say it, but I've gone from a guy that used to work part time at B&N because I liked being in a bookstore so much to a guy that rarely goes to bookstores. It all changed with my Nook purchase.

Once I had that I immediately stopped buying paper books.

That is one thought I had: In a way, the Nook is a direct competitor to B&N's own stores.

They've known that from the beginning.
That is why they did a lot of the things they did to annoy Nook users; to force people to go to the store.

Instead, they forced many to go to Amazon or Kobo.
