I’m almost embarrassed posting this, since these “sale” prices aren’t very good. But Gail Bowen’s Joanne Kilbourn books, which I really like, rarely go on sale, and as mentioned above are outrageously priced, mostly at $10.99 and up, when not on sale. Or even more – see An Image in the Lake at Kindle US below!!! So, a sale price of $5.99, which is discountable to $4.85 at Kobo if you have Kobo VIP, or a coupon, starts seeming not too bad. And if you live in, or can visit Canada, they are also the same price in Canadian dollars. Oh yeah, and with the exception of the last one, The Legacy, the sale prices are only at Kobo...

Right now the most recent four books in the series are mostly $5.99 at various retailers:

The Unlocking Season, #19

Kobo Canada: https://www.kobo.com/ca/en/ebook/the-unlocking-season

Now $0.75 for the omnibus of four books, but only at Kindle US, not at Kobo. I liked these books enough to be sad that the rest of the 30+ books in the series appear (per SYKM) not to have been translated into English...

I've read and enjoyed all four of these, and wish that some more of the remaining loooooong series would get translated from what I assume is Flemish.

The titles in the ominbus are:
  • The Square of Revenge
  • The Midas Murders
  • From Bruges with Love
  • The Fourth Figure

Delivering twist after brilliant twist, this clever whodunnit is sure to keep you guessing until the final page.

Welcome to Oldminster, a quaint little town where there’s always a mystery to be solved.

Frank Renfield, Baron of Renfield Hall, will stop at nothing to save himself from ruin. Even if that means marrying his daughter off to a rich American.

Unfortunately for him, she is already in love with a penniless nobody named Alan Lavender — to the glee of Alan’s greedy uncle Guy.

He’s been nosing into the Renfields’ murky past, and he says he’s uncovered a secret. Something so shocking it casts a shadow over Frank’s entire legacy.

Tensions run high at the hall, until Guy Lavender turns up dead.

A convenient coincidence for Frank?

Detectives French and Edwards are on the case. But in a town full of secrets, the truth can be hard to find.

And Guy’s won’t be the only body to fall before their work is done . . .

Who will be next to die under the Renfields’ roof?

Voices of Rome contains four novellas by Lindsey Davis, a couple of which I've read and enjoyed. I do think the blurb is a bit too flowery - Davis's books are among my favorites, but "two immortal series" and "finest living novelist of Ancient Rome" is a bit too much IMO . But that's not Davis' fault. The novellas are: The Bride from Bithynia, The Spook Who Spoke Again, Vesuvius by Night, and Invitation to Die. The collection has dropped to $0.99 in the US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C7Q9MG5S
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/voices-of-rome-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
Lindsey Davis has received the Crime Writer's Association Lifetime Achievement Award for her two immortal series of detective novels featuring Marcus Didius Falco and his adopted daughter, Flavia Albia. She is regarded as the finest living novelist of Ancient Rome. Here, for the first time in book form, are four novella-length stories written to illuminate her unparalleled output of the last 30 years.

The Bride from Bithynia tells the story of Aelia Camilla who travels 1000 miles to Britain to marry Gaius Flavius, a Roman officer. But their relationship struggles, then the province explodes in the Boudican Revolt. Now, it will be up to Aelia to save herself from the conflagration.

The Spook Who Spoke Again. Marcus Didius Alexander Postumus is an odd boy who has known two families. That of Marcus Didius himself and his actual birth mother, Thalia the Snake Dancer. Things begin to unravel quickly when he decides to emulate his adopted father and investigate a death in Thalia's troupe of exotic performers.

Vesuvius by Night. Two men share a room but seldom meet. Nonius is a pimp and part time thief who operates at night, Larius is a fresco painter who dreams of artistic greatness by day. When the volcano erupts, one will begin looting hastily abandoned villas, the other will do anything he can to save himself and his family.

Invitation to Die. When the Emperor Domitian invites the entire senatorial class to a banquet to honour the recent war dead, many think he intends to take revenge on his enemies. When the Camillus brothers enter the black-painted hall where the feast is being held and see their names engraved on monumental stones, they fear they will not survive the night...

Four pivotal events, fact and fiction. Four stories which allow Davis's much-loved characters new space and the opportunity to take personal roles in tense situations, with moving results. They face villainy, tragedy, accident, confusion and fear - but each story is told with the wry humour, and underpinned by human wisdom, courage and love.

I'm not usually a thriller-ish person, but for some reason, this one looks interesting to me. And it's on sale in the UK for £0.99.

A Cuban detective’s quest for vengeance against her father’s killer leads her to a mysterious Colorado mountain town in this intense crime thriller.

A man is killed in a hit-and-run on a frozen mountain road in the town of Fairview, Colorado. He is an illegal immigrant in a rich Hollywood resort community not unlike Telluride. No one is prosecuted for his death and his case is quietly forgotten.

Six months later another illegal makes a treacherous run across the border. Barely escaping with her life and sanity intact, she finds work as a maid with one of the employment agencies in Fairview. Secretly, she begins to investigate the shadowy collision that left her father dead.

The maid isn’t a maid. And she’s not Mexican, either. She’s Detective Mercado, a police officer from Havana, and she’s looking for answers: Who killed her father? Was it one of the smooth-talking Hollywood types? Was it a minion of the terrifying county sheriff? And why was her father, a celebrated defector to the United States, hiding in Colorado as the town ratcatcher?

Displaced is the sixth Hakim & Arnold book by Barbara Nadel. It’s $0.99 at Kindle US right now, but sadly not on sale at Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079GJ5S31

Spoiler:
Quote:
Irving Levy is a man with few roots and, now that he is terminally ill, is anxious to find anyone to whom he can leave his considerable property. When he learns that there may be more to the disappearance of his younger sister, who disappeared when she was a baby, he engages the services of Hakim and Arnold to investigate. Unwittingly in mortal danger, the private detectives and Levy enter the world of Barking Park Fair and the secrets its brightly coloured attractions conceal. Secrets that lead them not just back to a crime committed in 1963, but to the chaotic world of post-war Europe where few people were what they seemed.

Only Killers and Thieves by Paul Howarth is $2 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Quote:
An epic tale of revenge and survival, Only Killers and Thieves is a gripping and utterly transporting debut, bringing to life a colonial Australia that bears a striking resemblance to the American Wild West in its early years.

It is 1885, and a crippling drought threatens to ruin the McBride family. Their land is parched; their cattle are starving. When the rain miraculously comes, it renews their hope for survival. But, returning home one afternoon after swimming in a remote water hole that had been replenished by the downpour, fourteen-year-old Tommy and sixteen-year-old Billy encounter a shocking tragedy.

Thirsty for vengeance against the man who they believe has wronged them—their former Aboriginal stockman—the distraught brothers turn to the ruthless, cunning John Sullivan, their father’s former employer and the wealthiest landowner in the region. Sullivan gathers a posse, under the leadership of the dangerous, fascinating Inspector Edmund Noone, comprising members of the Queensland Native Police, an infamous arm of British colonial power charged with the “dispersal” of indigenous Australians to “protect” the rights of white settlers. As they journey across the barren outback in pursuit, their harsh and horrifying experiences will have a devastating impact on Tommy, one that will torment him for the rest of his life—and will hold enduring consequences for a young country struggling to come into its own.

Re-creating a period of Australian and British history evocative of the violence of the American frontier era, Only Killers and Thieves is an unforgettable story of family, guilt, empire, race, manhood, and faith.

Aurora: A Novel by David Koepp is $2 at Amazon, B&N and Kobo US.

Koepp is mostly known as a scriptwriter and director. He wrote the scripts for the first two Jurassic Parks, Death Becomes Her, Mission: Impossible, Spider-Man, Stir of Echoes and Secret Window. This book sounds like a larger scale version of his film The Trigger Effect.

Quote:
In Aurora, Illinois, Aubrey Wheeler is just trying to get by after her semi-criminal ex-husband split, leaving behind his unruly teenage son.

Then the lights go out—not just in Aurora but across the globe. A solar storm has knocked out power almost everywhere. Suddenly, all problems are local, very local, and Aubrey must assume the mantle of fierce protector of her suburban neighborhood.

Across the country lives Aubrey’s estranged brother, Thom. A fantastically wealthy, neurotically over-prepared Silicon Valley CEO, he plans to ride out the crisis in a gilded desert bunker he built for maximum comfort and security.

But the complicated history between the siblings is far from over, and what feels like the end of the world is just the beginning of several long-overdue reckonings—which not everyone will survive . . .

Aurora is suspenseful storytelling—both large scale and small—at its finest.
