Field of Fire is the 7th in the C. I. D. Room series by Roderic Jeffries, written with pen name, Peter Alding. It is free right now at Kindle US.

Spoiler:
Quote:
With two state visits within days of each other, Fortrow C.I.D. had problems — especially when there was evidence that an assassination attempt was being planned.

Then there was a murder — so vicious that it could only be a warning to any would-be informer.

Struggling to identify and locate the gang, Detective Constable Kerr had another problem when a car plunged into the Docks, complete with driver — why, on a cold, wet night, were both of the car’s front windows wound down?

Darn! I hate it when that happens...

The publisher (now Endeavour Media) does seem to be (slowly) cycling through the titles in this series, so more are probably on the way. And the cycle might have been messed up by the split/winding up/whatever happened with Endeavour Press a little while back, but my library at Kindle US now shows three in the last six weeks.

So, patience young grasshopper

Berlin Noir is an ominbus of the first three titles in the Bernie Gunther series by Philip Kerr. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US. Titles are:
  • March Violets
  • The Pale Criminal
  • A German Requiem
The individual titles in Kerr's Gunther series tend to be absurdly priced at $10 and up in the US, so if you even think you might someday be interested, grab this while you can! If you travel a lot, note that these three titles have all been on sale fairly recently in the UK, so check carefully before you buy. (Seeing this reminded me that I want to bump this series up on my TBR list to give it a try...)

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Berlin-Noir-P...dp/B006LFO1DA/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/berlin-noir

Spoiler:
Quote:
Now in one volume—the first three novels in Philip Kerr’s New York Times bestselling historical mystery series starring hard-boiled detective Bernie Gunther...

“A Chandleresque knight errant caught in insane historical surroundings. Bernie walks down streets so mean that nobody can stay alive and remain truly clean.”—John Powers, Fresh Air (NPR)

Ex-policeman Bernie Gunther thought he'd seen everything on the streets of 1930s Berlin. But then he went freelance, and each case he tackled sucked him further into the grisly excesses of Nazi subculture. And even after the war, amidst the decayed, imperial splendour of Vienna, Bernie uncovered a legacy that made the wartime atrocities look lily-white in comparison...

This collection includes:
MARCH VIOLETS
THE PALE CRIMINAL
A GERMAN REQUIEM

Skinner's Ordeal is the 5th in the Bob Skinner series by Quintin Jardine. It has dropped to $0.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Edinburgh's hardest cop faces private crisis and public disaster...

Skinner faces both the biggest case of his career and crippling personal crisis in Skinner's Ordeal, the thrilling fifth novel in Quintin Jardine's bestselling Edinburgh crime series. Perfect for fans of Ian Rankin and Peter Robinson.

'Quintin Jardine has created the toughest Scottish cop since Taggart' - Peterborough Evening Telegraph

A mid-air explosion; a plane plunges to disaster from the Scottish skies, the British and American Defence Secretaries among the victims. Out of the blue, Edinburgh's Deputy Chief Constable finds himself leading the biggest investigation of his career. The means of destruction is apparent from the start, but the investigation quickly grows more puzzling - for once they have an embarrassment of suspects with motive and opportunity. Then sudden random violence wrenches Skinner himself out of the picture. While his colleagues struggle with the mass of clues, he lies on the brink of death, trapped with the horrors from his own hidden past. As Skinner's ordeal reaches its crescendo, the police pursue their suspects one by one, until at last they are brought to a dramatic, thrilling, but tragic conclusion.

The Dragon of Handale is the 5th in the Hildegard of Meaux series by Cassandra Clark. One edition of this title is on US Kindle Countdown at $0.99 for about 1 3/4 more days. Be careful, there is another Kindle edition for $7.99, so use the link and check carefully before you buy!

link: https://www.amazon.com/DRAGON-HANDAL...dp/B00D42C2IY/

Spoiler:
Quote:
In the fifth in this stellar series Hildegard returns from pilgrimage to Compostela only to be sent by her Prioress to the remote and sinister Handale Priory. Used as a house of correction for sinning nuns, it lies in the north of the county in the middle of a vast wood and is run by the ambiguous Abbess Basilda and her close group of hard-faced acolytes. Hildegard discovers the corpse of a young man in the morgue and is told that the dragon of Handale has killed him. But Hildegard does not believe in dragons. Warned against walking in the woods she refuses to be penned in like a prisoner and discovers a secret tower, locked and barred, with armed men on guard. What is so valuable that it needs a guard? Has it anything to do with the mystery of the young man's death? And why have assassins been pursuing the King's courier across the savage moorland only to murder him at a lonely wayside tavern? Hildegard risks all dangers to seek out the truth.

Killing Plato is the second in the Jack Shepherd series by Jake Needham. It is free right now at Kindle US.

link: https://www.amazon.com/KILLING-PLATO...dp/B006KIEADO/

Spoiler:
Quote:
“The gritty and taut KILLING PLATO is 100% unadulterated attitude. Needham’s provocative views about Asian culture jump at you from every page.” —Singapore Straits Times

Jack Shepherd was a politically connected American lawyer until he traded the fierce intrigues of Washington for the quiet life of a college professor in Thailand. Everything had been going pretty well for him there, too, at least it had until the day he walked into a bar on the jet-set island of Phuket and found the world’s most famous fugitive waiting for him.

Plato Karsarkis was an international celebrity straight out of Vanity Fair until a New York grand jury indicted him for smuggling Iraqi oil and charged him with racketeering and money laundering. There’s also the matter of a woman he may or may not have murdered to cover it all up. When Karsarkis fled the United States and disappeared, the world’s media whipped itself into a frenzy searching for him.

Karsarkis is waiting for Shepherd in that Phuket bar because he wants to hire him. He figures a presidential pardon would be his ticket back to America, and he thinks Shepherd’s connections to the White House just might get it for him. But the U.S. Marshals are in Phuket, too, and they need Shepherd’s help as well. The marshals want Shepherd to set a trap for Karsarkis so they can grab him and drag him back to New York. All Shepherd wants is for everybody to go away and leave him alone.

At least he does until he learns a chilling secret that plunges him a violent spiral of friendship and betrayal and pulls him straight back into the life he thought he had left behind in Washington.

The marshals aren’t really in Phuket to arrest Plato Karsarkis.

They’re there to kill him.

The Good, the Bad, and the Emus is the 17th in the much-nominated/awarded Meg Langslow series by Donna Andrews. It has dropped to £1.27 at Kindle UK.

link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Good-Bad-Em...dp/B00HP1I7UM/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Life will never be the same for Meg Langslow after family secrets are revealed, introducing a whole new layer of intrigue in Donna Andrews's beloved series.

Meg's long-lost paternal grandfather, Dr. Blake, has hired Stanley Denton to find her grandmother Cordelia. Dr. Blake was reunited with his family when he saw Meg's picture—she's a dead ringer for Cordelia—and now Stanley has found a trail to his long-lost love in a small town less than an hour's drive away. He convinces Meg to come with him to meet her, but unfortunately, the woman they meet is Cordelia's cousin—Cordelia died several years ago, and the cousin suspects she was murdered by her long-time neighbor.
Stanley and Meg agree to help track down the killer and get justice for Cordelia. Grandfather even has perfect cover--he will come to stage a rescue of the feral emus and ostriches (escaped from an abandoned farm) that infest this town. He dashes off to organize the rescue—which will, of course, involve most of Meg's family and friends in Caerphilly. But then, the evil neighbor is murdered, and not only Cordelia's cousin but also the entire contingent of emu-rescuers, who have had conflict with the neighbor, are suspects. Only Meg and the cousin—who seems to share a lot of telling traits with Meg—can find the real killer and clear the air in The Good, the Bad, and the Emus, the newest beverage-spittingly funny installment in this uproarious series from the one-and-only Donna Andrews.

The third in this series, A World of Trouble, is now a US Kindle Countdown deal at $1.99 for about 5 more days. It is also a UK Kindle Countdown deal at £1.99 for about 4 1/4 more days.

US Kindle: https://www.amazon.com/WORLD-TROUBLE...dp/B007N6A4DW/
UK Kindle: https://www.amazon.co.uk/WORLD-TROUB...dp/B007N6A4DW/

Spoiler:
Quote:
"A WORLD OF TROUBLE is one terrific novel." – The Bangkok Post

Jack Shepherd was sick of Washington politics, sick of corporate law, and even a little sick of himself. So he hit the road looking for a new start, made a couple of wrong turns, and somehow wound up in Hong Kong. Now he needs a job, and being a lawyer for General Chalerm Kitnarock is a job, so he takes it.

Shepherd could certainly have done a lot worse for himself. Charlie Kitnarok is the world’s ninety-eighth richest man. He rules an international corporate empire and controls billions in personal assets. But he’s also a former Thai prime minister now living in exile in Dubai. When he’s not making money, he’s plotting his return to political power in Thailand.

For Shepherd, that could be a problem. Thailand already has a prime minister, and she's a woman with whom Shepherd once had a brief relationship. It will get particularly messy if, as Shepherd suspects, Charlie is smuggling arms to his supporters and intends to use the Thai army to seize control of the country. Can Shepherd keep his two friends from destroying each other and prevent Thailand from sliding into chaos?

Thailand is hurtling closer and closer to a bloody civil war. And as unlikely as it may sound, Jack Shepherd may be the only person on earth who can stop it.
