Did you see that Blackmask is back?
I looked at it, but it looks somewhat anemic at this moment.
Ahhh, well. Don |

Great to have it back! Hopefully it'll "fill out" again with time.

Blackmask? It used to me a wonderful web site for free eBooks. Got closed down about a year ago because its owner rather foolishly (IMHO) ignored a legal warning that he was violating copyright by making available on his site the "Doc Savage" books. The copyright holders of the books took him to court and got the whole site shut down. Excellent news that it's back again.
Dr Drib - are you sure it's back? The URL http://www.blackmask.com takes one to a site called "Munseys" - is this really Blackmask??? |

Yes. See Teleread for a discussion about the return of Blackmask and the meaning of "Munsey's."

AS the writings around say, the new site is in beta for a while. There are no Doc Savage or Shadow books which were what the lawsuit was all about.
He does offer a lot of formats including LRF for the Sony Reader. |

Quote:
http://gutenberg.cc/Black_Mask/pulpfiction.htm#0_0_3 and click on any Doc Savage e-book, you get your answer: "The eBook you are looking for has been removed because the source of the eBook, Blackmask Online, provided the eBook in violation of the rights of the copyright owner, The Conde Nast Publications. In recent litigation between Conde Nast and Blackmask Online, the United States District Court for the District of Maryland ruled that the books are protected by copyright and may not be reproduced or distributed without Conde Nast's permission. A copy of the Court's decision is available at Advance Magazine Publishers Inc. v. Leach, 466 F.Supp.2d 628 (D. Md. 2006). Conde Nast has authorized a series of reprints of many of The Shadow and Doc Savage books, and they are available from Nostalgia Ventures" http://www.nostalgiaventures.com/mai...2_content.html Though it seems that if you are outside the USA you can try Gutenberg Australia... |

Ouch! Well I guess it goes without saying that if a publisher asks you politely to remove copyright material, it might be a good idea to comply. I'll have to check out what his offerings are when I get a chance. Thanks for the source!
