I nominate The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell. From Amazon:

In 2019, humanity finally finds proof of extraterrestrial life when a listening post in Puerto Rico picks up exquisite singing from a planet which will come to be known as Rakhat. While United Nations diplomats endlessly debate a possible first contact mission, the Society of Jesus quietly organizes an eight-person scientific expedition of its own. What the Jesuits find is a world so beyond comprehension that it will lead them to question the meaning of being "human." When the lone survivor of the expedition, Emilio Sandoz, returns to Earth in 2059, he will try to explain what went wrong...

I also second The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and City at World's End.

I'll SECOND it!

Good point. I plead the lateness of the hr as the reason I forgot that with City At World's End. Basically the book deals with a town that is hit with a super atomic bomb. Rather than being vaporized the whole town is blasted into the far distant future.

Old Man's War is a great book but I've already read it.

I'd remind everyone to VERY EXPLICITELY STATE what you are nominating, seconding or thirding.....it is difficult enough to keep track though PilotBob seems to do it somehow...let's make it easier for him if we can!

(This is not a vote.)

Should The Shape of Things to Come by H.G. Wells win, be sure to check out the 1936 film adaptation, Things To Come. Not having read the novel, I'm not sure how true to the book it is, but it's a fascinating film in its own right.

[This is NOT a nomination, because I won't be participating, but...]

I was not satisfied with The Sparrow or its sequel (note, reading the sequel is probably not necessary unless you are into complete closure). It might be argued that my dissatisfaction arose from some idealogical problems that I feel reflected negatively in some aspects of the book (some character and plot points) that, for me, diminished the book's quality.

Saying that...actually because of that, I would definitely recommend the book to others interested in SF. I think it has a deserved place of significance in recent SF (for my mind, if you follow SF it's possibly "must read"), and is very ripe for discussion. It is, as you say, interesting.

Cheers,
Marc

I read it the first time more than 40 years ago in my early 20's (yes, I'm that old). Not sure I really understood it, but I really should read it again. My last vote is a second for The Man in the High Castle.

Man...this is HARD to come up with just three to propose. I have a question since I haven't done this group read before...the specific sub-genre specified is Rivets/SF. I take this to mean more of a space travel sort of work than other options? Or is general SF good enough? I have a list, almost, but to me when you talk rivets & SF it means ray-guns & rocketships (or submarines) should be part of the story somehow.
