media transfers?
I've been rummaging through a bunch of stuff desperately looking for paperwork for court. I came across some cassette tapes that my Dad had made interviewing my grandmother for family history. I'd love to get them onto c.d.s and give them to family members. Ideas?

Should be able to connect a tape player to the line-in on a PC and record them to the computer, then burn the resulting files as audio CD's.

I have used Nero's Soundtrax (I don't know if it is still bundled in the latest paid Nero collections but seems to be now offered free on the Nero website) and there are a number of free applications around among which is Audacity which I have also used. Both allow one to edit as well which is useful if there are unwanted pauses, etc. Takes a while but works in the background, plus one obviously needs a cassette tape player and not so many of those around these days. |

Yep. Use a patch cable to connect the headphone output of an old tape player (still have your old Walkman?) to the line in of your computer. The Windows "Sound Recorder" utility will work, but the (free) Audacity will be a lot better in the long run. (I have used the Linux version of Audacity for years, and have an older version of the Windows package on an old XP box.)
There's some info on Windows Sound Recorder <HERE>. Another option is to get a digital audio recorder that takes SD cards. Do the same patch cable connection, record to the SD card, then read it into your computer. |

Music match jukebox used to be able to do that. I don't think it's even still developed any longer.

You just need an inexpensive RCA cable to connect a tape player to the computer, and a free download of Audacity. Very easy; I just finished converting the last of my cassettes a short time ago.
Here's one step-by-step guide. |
