A few years later, Hollow Mountain is now $1.99 at Kindle US. The link below is still good.

And the fourth title, Sleeping Dogs, has also dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00V6FLXEA

However, if you want to finish the series, the fifth and final title, A Thousand Cuts, published several years ago in 2017, will run you $20.30. Wow! I'm not providing a link for that one...

For some reason (perhaps because they have a road running across their airport, which has to close (the road, not the airport ) whenever a plane takes off or lands), I've always wanted to visit Gibraltar, and I tend to enjoy books set there.

Almost the entire Travis McGee series, by John D MacDonald, has dropped to £1.99 each at Kindle UK, as of the middle of September. I'm having trouble believing I didn't notice this before, and I have no idea how long the price drops will last. The exceptions to the £1.99 pricing are the first two books in the series, The Deep Blue Good-by and Nightmare in Pink, which are £0.99 each. And then A Purple Place for Dying and The Quick Red Fox are each £2.99. But all of the others, all seventeen others, are £1.99 each. Oh yeah, and there's also an omnibus of the first three titles going for £3.99 right now, which is about the same price, give or take £0.02, as those three titles are individually.

Considering that the Travis McGee books are mostly $8.99 and up in the US, with very rare and brief prices drops on a single title every few months, this is a great sale, not just for the prices, but for the fact that the whole series is on sale at once. Wow!

There doesn't seem to be a McGee series page in the UK, but here's an author page, with McGee added as a keyword, that does a pretty good job. The sort by price doesn't seem to be working perfectly, but the McGee titles are all pretty much grouped right up front, in the first couple of pages: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/kindle-db...SelectorHeader

Spoiler:
A terrible power struggle threatens the very core of Britain…
In 1376, the Black Prince dies of a terrible sickness, closely followed by his father, King Edward III in 1377. The crown of England is left in the hands of a mere boy, and the great nobles gather like hungry wolves round the empty throne.

Soon the prelates of the church and the powerful Merchant Princes of London are drawn in. One of these, Sir Thomas Springall, is foully murdered within a few days of the old king’s death.

Sir John Cranston, the coroner of London, is ordered to investigate. He is assisted by Brother Athelstan, a penitent Dominican monk. From the sinister slums of Whitefriars to the barbaric splendour of the English Court, Cranston and Athelstan are drawn into a dark and terrifying web of intrigue…

Quote:
When Bailey Ruth Raeburn passed over into the great beyond, she was delighted to discover her sleuthing days would last an eternity. Joining Heaven's Department of Good Intentions, she uses her unique advantages as a ghost—sometimes you see her, sometimes you don't—to help those in need and ensure the wicked get their just deserts.

However, on this latest mission, Bailey Ruth finds it more difficult than ever to keep up with her boss Wiggins's rules for good spirit deportment. Not only is the woman she is supposed to save determined to thwart Bailey Ruth's good intentions at every turn, she just so happens to be one of Bailey Ruth's oldest enemies. Not that that should matter to one of Heaven's best and brightest emissaries, but still, there is only so much a person can put up with—living or dead.

But solving Bailey Ruth's toughest case yet means managing a recalcitrant charge, a fraudulent medium, a mother's heartbreak, old passions and new, and a telltale rawhide dog bone. Heaven help her!

A goods train speeds through the Sapperton Tunnel, but disaster strikes before it can reach the other side as it collides with an unusual blockage on the tracks: seven sheep penned in place. Specially requested to investigate the carnage in Gloucestershire, Inspector Colbeck and Sergeant Leeming are confronted with a bizarre case unlike anything they've encountered before.

Stephen Rydall, board member of the Great Western Railway that manages the route, is convinced this tragedy is a personal attack on him and fears for the safety of his shepherd, missing since the incident. Rydall has many enemies: a churlish squire, a scheming principal and a local ruffian who always manages to evade the law. But, as Colbeck will soon discover, the man also has a closely guarded secret of his own...

Today's Big Deal in the UK is 8 books by Patricia Cornwell for £0.99 each. These are the second through ninth titles in Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta series. For some odd reason, the first one isn't included - it's at £4.99 right now (sigh!), although it was on briefly on sale for £0.99 a while back. I'm not going to list eight titles, but if you need/want some early Scarpetta, here you go...

The Whites by Richard Price is $1.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
Richard Price's New York Times bestseller, The Whites, is an electrifying tale of a New York City police detective under siege-by an unsolved murder, by his own dark past, and by a violent stalker seeking revenge.

Back in the run-and-gun days of the mid-1990s, when a young Billy Graves worked in the South Bronx as part of an aggressive anti-crime unit known as the Wild Geese, he made headlines by accidentally shooting a ten-year-old boy while struggling with an angel-dusted berserker on a crowded street. Branded as a loose cannon by his higher-ups, Billy spent years enduring one dead-end posting after another. Now in his early forties, he has somehow survived and become a sergeant in Manhattan Night Watch, a small team of detectives charged with responding to all post-midnight felonies from Wall Street to Harlem. Mostly, his unit acts as little more than a set-up crew for the incoming shift, but after years in police purgatory, Billy is content simply to do his job.

Then comes a call that changes everything: Night Watch is summoned to the four a.m. fatal slashing of a man in Penn Station, and this time Billy's investigation moves beyond the usual handoff to the day tour. And when he discovers that the victim was once a suspect in the unsolved murder of a twelve-year-old boy-a savage case with connections to the former members of the Wild Geese-the bad old days are back in Billy's life with a vengeance, tearing apart enduring friendships forged in the urban trenches and even threatening the safety of his family.

Razor-sharp and propulsively written, The Whites introduces Harry Brandt--a new master of American crime fiction.

FREE/BARGAIN — Mystery, Suspense & Thrillers

More decades ago than I care to remember, Nancy Drew and Encyclopedia Brown got me started on mysteries. And now the first Nancy Drew book, The Secret of the Old Clock, by Carolyn Keene, is on sale at Kindle and Kobo US for $1.99, and priced at £1.49 in the UK. Sadly, with one exception, the rest of the 163 (!!!) books are mostly $8.99 and up in the US and £5.99 and up in the UK. (At least for the first thirty or so, which is all I had time to check, since for some reason, "sort by price" doesn't seem to be working for me this morning...) Which is not going to encourage me in more than one trip down memory lane, nor is it going to encourage parents to buy these books for their kids, to get their kids hooked on reading. (The exception is the fourth book in the series, Mystery at Lilac Inn, which is also £1.49 in the UK, but still expensive in the US....) Anyway, here are links:

The Secret of the Old Clock
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001R11CJY/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the...imited-edition
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001R11CJY

Mystery at Lilac Inn
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001R9DI66

Oh, and BTW, the first one is supposedly an "80th Anniversary Edition" with bonus material. Which I guess limits the number of decades ago it could have been for me .
