Connect Classics Recommendations?
So I've got until the end of the month to use by 50 Classics ebooks credits. ( http://ebooks.connect.com/specials/sonyclassics/ ) My question is: Has anybody found any of them that aren't commonly available through Project Gutenberg? (or elsewhere, I'd suppose.)
Yes, I do know that the reason these books are so low priced is because the texts are now public domain and not copyrighted under US law.... What I'm trying to do is use my credits wisely, such that I don't DL classics that I can do myself easily with BookDesigner or HTML2LRF. But there are so many, both in the Classics section and PG. On that basis, any recommendations? |

Have a look in the ebooks section here. You'll find a lot of the PG books already are nicely formatted for the Sony and free of charge too.

I used my credit to get some classics that I couldn't find in the upload section only to see them uploaded a little bit later... with far better quality. My advice is to use the ebooks section as your primary source for classics; only buy from Connect if you don't find something here that you want to read right now (because if you don't want to read it right now, it will show up eventually, with no DRM, with a more pleasant format, and probably with beautiful illustrations). And don't forget that you can request books that you are interested in in this thread: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10290.

Speaking for myself only, for me the most difficult texts to assemble are often those in poetry, due to line lengths, scansion, etc. The way we quote using MLA (Modern Language Association) guidelines is that we would use [/] to signify a line break.
if you like poetry, you might want to use your credit in that area. Also, if there are specific authors you really like, and they just haven't made it to the Upload area yet, then rather than wait (assuming you want to read it now!), I would also obtain those titles from Connect. And last, if there are specific genres that the Upload section is shy on, then you might want to obtain them from Connect. Those are my 3.2367 cents worth of comment. Don |

Thanks, all, for the comments.
Yep, I know that we've got a great downloads section - I've contributed to it, D/Led from it, and am currently working on more contribution(s) for it. But my point was that I've got the credit for the 50 Classics Downloads - it's already there. They must be used by the 31st, so I have 21 days to download 50 books. And many responders are correct: I'd rather not use my credits on books that are already available here. I'm just (trying) to avoid wasting the credits I got for free, without having to do hours of cross-checking that (maybe) others have already done. Maybe I'm looking for what titles others with the credits D/Led from Sony. But thanks for the help, all! |

Are you sure about the classics credits expiring? On my Connect account only the 50$ credit has an expiration date, not the 50 classics downloads. Those are listed as coupon with no expiration date. Sadly, I used almost of all the 50$ credit on 3 books, 2 of which I've already read from the library but I did not own and one that I own in hardcover but I do not have an ebook version, but I used only one classic download presuming they do not expire.

I think Patricia has expressed an interest in doing Balzac, but that may be awhile. Balzac wrote a LOT. Anyway, my point is that if you do like him, then that is something the Upload section is shy on at this moment. I plan to do a lot of Trollope; but there's not much in our Upload section at this moment. I will be doing his Paliser novels and many of his independent works shortly. (Connect at this time does have a number of titles.) I'm in the same dilemna as you: I still have 31 titles I need to download by the end of this month or I lose the "credit" forever. I hope this has helped somewhat. Don |

I haven't downloaded any of the Balzacs in the Sony Connect Classics. Has anyone else? I'd like to know what they look like.
The versions on PG are mostly .txt files. This means that all the accents are missing when any French terms are used. If Sony have just done a mechanical conversion then the unaccented result is likely to be disappointing. Can anyone say whether they have accents or not? I am planning to do more French classics in translation but this will be a slow-ish process because it is time-consuming to restore the missing accents. I have got one tip - open a second file in Word. Set the language as French. Then copy unaccented words and phrases to this file. The autocorrect will usually (but not invariably) add the missing circumflexes, cedillas etc, which you can then paste back into your working file. |

I am up to page 31 in The Commission in Lunacy, and there are no accent marks of any kind.

Thanks, Nate. That confirms my suspicions. I may well have a go at some more Balzac.
