One thing I love about the HDX is the ability to hide the Carousel. |

There wasn't much fanfare and I guess people don't think its that big an upgrade, similar to PW1 --> PW2.
To me though, its a significant upgrade. I like the hardware much better, its lighter, the buttons are much better placed and the entire thing is much faster. On the old one, if I swiped the carousel it would stutter a few times as it went through. The HDX is very smooth. Added bonus: being able to download Prime videos for offline viewing!! |

I still need to get a good sleeve for it to travel in though. Neither cases do much for protection and with the HDX being super thin it needs alot more protection than most tablets. I upgraded from the original Kindle Fire so you can image how big of an upgrade this is for me! |

6,000 books???
Quote:
I don't think I have read anywhere near that many books in my entire life ! Each of my books numbers from 600 to 1,000 pages. I doubt I read more than 6 per year. I'm carrying 46 eBooks in the Amazon Cloud now with about 30 on my HDX. I keep only about 6 eBooks on my Home Screen of which 4 are Bible related. I am using 3.83 Gb of storage on my HDX and have 21.85 Gb free. Music occupies 1.66 Gb, Applications occupy 167.32 Mb and books occupy 104.05 Mb. I purchased the 32 Gb model. Go to Settings / Device / Storage to see your numbers. Last edited by sirmaru; 10-23-2013 at 01:36 PM. |

Did you buy them all from Amazon?

You said you only got the 16 Gb model. I have a hunch you are almost maxed out. |

I buy from Amazon, Kobo and other stores. I always buy from the store that has the lowest price. |

I'm going to wait until at least the November updates are in hand, but at this point I don't think I'll be getting an HDX.
I prefer a more neutral tablet experience rather than one that is focussed on media consumption (specifically Amazon's). That's despite the fact that I don't consume much media from anyone else. For one thing, I want easier access to apps and services that Amazon does not allow Fire users to partake of, even though they are listed in the Appstore (Dropbox, Mantano Reader, alternate browsers). I realize it is not difficult to side load these (and many more) things, having been through this with my (little used) 1st gen Fire, but I don't like having to do it because of Amazon's arbitrary (and unstated) policy. Without any physical 'output ports' (HDMI or USB host) it's not as flexible as other tablets. Has anyone here actually used the Miracast feature? The 'fling' feature requires a compatible device, and I don't have plans to get any of the ones listed. Meanwhile Nexus7 and iPads have both wireless and wired options. aGPS is on the 4G model but without mapping software (almost for sure there's nothing very good available in Appstore) what good is it? Most iOS and midrange Android devices have this as a matter of course. The HDX has some great core features and specs but I think a Nexus7 or iPad probably are a better match to my desire for a more open ended and flexible tablet experience. |

You do realize that GPS is only available on 4G iPads and that it will cost you an additional $130? (Amazon charges an extra $100). By contrast, most Android tablets include it in their base models.

That's exactly what I might do, next year. The reduced size and weight appeal greatly to me.

They look great for a decent price. It's mostly a content issue with me - Canadians can't buy movies or tv from Amazon. Maybe it's the same for other non-US members.
Having invested in iTunes video content on an iPad, it makes sense to stay with apple - just as I stick with a kindle for books. |

Do you guys think that the new iPad mini and iPad air release will affect Kindle Fire sales numbers?
