Riddell, Mrs. J. H.: Shades and Shadows (collected ghosts). v1. 11 Sep 2018

From the golden age of Victorian supernatural fiction, a treasure trove of the writings of one of the very best ghost-story writers of the era, bringing you four novels and thirteen (!) stories.

Here are chilling tales of ghastly intruders into the everyday world of (mostly) everyday folks, seeking revenge, retribution, or reconciliation. So sit you down in a dark and quiet corner, and let Mrs. Riddell tell you a story….

(This collection of Riddell’s weird fiction contains all but two titles: the novel The Disappearance of Mr. Jeremiah Redworth, and the short story “Why Dr. Cray Left Southam.”)

The contents of this book were first published 1867 ~ 1899. Text is in the public domain worldwide, because the author died more than 100 years ago, and the works were published prior to 1923.

Charlotte Riddell, known also as Mrs J. H. Riddell (30 September 1832 – 24 September 1906), was a highly popular and influential Irish-born writer in the Victorian period. The author of 56 books (novels and short story collections), she was also part-owner and editor of St. James’s Magazine, a prominent London literary journal in the 1860s. Mrs. Riddell, by making commerce the theme of many of her novels, introduced a new element into English fiction, and was renowned as the novelist of The City of London.

She was also one of the best Victorian authors of the supernatural, and was well regarded by some of the genre’s severest critics, including M. R. James. Her stories are noted for true-to-life descriptions of people and places, and deal realistically with the financial struggles of the middle class. This realism, interwoven with the supernatural, makes her ghost stories the more effective.

This is my own compilation. Transcripts were obtained from Project Gutenberg, Gutenberg Australia, Hathi Trust, Internet Archive, Google Books, gothictexts.wordpress.com, vaultofghastlytales.com, womenwriters.digitalscholarship.emory.edu.

PDF scans were not available to proof every title.
Obvious textual errors were silently corrected; punctuation, diacritics, and italics formatted. Punctuation and hyphenation were normalized, editing details are available at end of book. Embedded fonts for titling and drop caps.
