I went for that book too because of the setting, but I haven't read any of his previous works. I hope it's good!

He's a new author (this is his 3rd book) with some room to grow and I feel like he is getting better. His main character has an issue which influences his personal and professional life that I find very believable.

Mainly, I really just want to support a local author.

I also went with A Cold and Broken Hallelujah by Tyler Dilts. It was a hard choice this month, which is good!

Glad I'm not the only one who had trouble! Usually I'm not really interested in any of them so it was weird to see 3 of them that appealed to me.

Anybody finished The Paper Magician? Is it good? Sounds interesting but if it's another Night Circus I'll pass - beautiful scenes but too pointless to finish :P

It's that time again...

Kindle First for September

Historical Fiction
The Moonlight Palace - Liz Rosenberg
Spoiler:
Agnes Hussein, descendant of the last sultan of Singapore and the last surviving member of her immediate family, has grown up among her eccentric relatives in the crumbling Kampong Glam palace, a once-opulent relic given to her family in exchange for handing over Singapore to the British.

Now Agnes is seventeen and her family has fallen into genteel poverty, surviving on her grandfather’s pension and the meager income they receive from a varied cast of boarders. As outside forces conspire to steal the palace out from under them, Agnes struggles to save her family and finds bravery, love, and loyalty in the most unexpected places. The Moonlight Palace is a coming-of-age tale rich with historical detail and unforgettable characters set against the backdrop of dazzling 1920s Singapore.

Mystery
Tunnel Vision - Aric Davis
Spoiler:
Some mysteries are better left unsolved.

It’s been fifteen years since Mandy Reasoner was murdered—a crime for which her boyfriend, Duke, was convicted. But when high school students and best friends Betty and June discover that Mandy was June’s long-forgotten aunt, they decide to pursue the mystery. Galvanized by the growing community who doubts the evidence against Duke and is rallying to free him, the two girls start on a path that will bring them not only to Duke himself but smack into Nickel, a canny, tough-as-nails teenage P.I. attempting to keep his own life together. They make a good team, but Nickel is on his own mission of revenge, and the web of lies surrounding Mandy’s murder is growing ever thicker.

The closer they get to the truth, the less clear the path becomes. Will they survive the fight to bring Mandy’s killer to justice?

Award-winning author Aric Davis brings back his captivating anti-hero, Nickel, in Tunnel Vision, a work of edgy noir about unlikely friendship and long-overdue justice.

YA Fantasy
Girl on a Wire - Gwenda Bond
Spoiler:
A ballerina, twirling on a wire high above the crowd. Horses, prancing like salsa dancers. Trapeze artists, flying like somersaulting falcons. And magic crackling through the air. Welcome to the Cirque American!

Sixteen-year-old Jules Maroni’s dream is to follow in her father’s footsteps as a high-wire walker. When her family is offered a prestigious role in the new Cirque American, it seems that Jules and the Amazing Maronis will finally get the spotlight they deserve. But the presence of the Flying Garcias may derail her plans. For decades, the two rival families have avoided each other as sworn enemies.

Jules ignores the drama and focuses on the wire, skyrocketing to fame as the girl in a red tutu who dances across the wire at death-defying heights. But when she discovers a peacock feather—an infamous object of bad luck—planted on her costume, Jules nearly loses her footing. She has no choice but to seek help from the unlikeliest of people: Remy Garcia, son of the Garcia clan matriarch and the best trapeze artist in the Cirque.

As more mysterious talismans believed to possess unlucky magic appear, Jules and Remy unite to find the culprit. And if they don’t figure out what’s going on soon, Jules may be the first Maroni to do the unthinkable: fall.

Romance
Playing It Safe - Barbie Bohrman
Spoiler:
Julia Boyd has dated more than her share of jerks, and she’s done even pretending to like them. Putting her dating life on hold and focusing on her event planning career is a much safer bet for the blue-eyed blonde…until she meets her newest client.

Organizing the opening for an art gallery should be a breeze for Julia, but gallery owner Alex Holt is becoming very distracting. Tall and muscular with enough charisma and sexy dimples to make Julia swoon, Alex could be the perfect man. The two of them click immediately, creating enough witty banter to ignite sparks.

But just before flames of passion can erupt with Alex, Julia begins planning an engagement party…and learns the groom is Aiden, the man who broke her heart years ago. When Aiden admits that he still has feelings for Julia, everything changes. Should she seek shelter in the familiarity of the past, or should she risk everything on a brand-new love?

I got Tunnel Vision. I looked at Girl on a Wire, but it sounded really cheesy and predictable.

What horrible choices. I'll probably get the mystery, because it looks to be the least objectionable of the bunch. But then; nothing says I have to take one, so I just might skip this month.

Moonlight Palace is the only one that looks even remotely interesting to me. Easy pick this month by process of elimination.
