Can I use Calibre without the Library always in the way?

Why would I want to load books into Calibre's Library when I just want to use Calibre to read one? Can I use Calibre without this Library constantly wasting my time loading its books?
1: See an EPUB file.
2: Click it to open.
3: Calibre opens it.
Like a normal program operates.
Is this possible or are Calibre's designers living on another planet of self importance thinking their hallowed Library actually has some sort of function other than wasting the time of millions of people?

The vast majority of users use Calibre because of its library management function. Calibre is very powerful and versatile tool.

Yes, you can use Calibre to just view a book without loading the book into the library. Just use Calibre Viewer program. You can associate *.epub files in a file manager (on Windows, Linux, MacOSX) to be opened by the viewer.

Next time you ask for help with Calibre, please try to do so without without attacking Calibre designers. Calibre designer provided you with an extremely powerful software free of charge and works very hard to make the software just the way we (the vast majority of users) want to have it. He listens to our suggestions and constantly improves the software.

Of course it's possible and very simple to associate your files with the viewer directly, just like with any other program. What, you haven't managed to learn how to do that in all the years Calibre has existed?

Correct. And as you have clearly demonstrated, calibre is working like a normal program. That is, when installing a program, it tells the OS what type of files it can handle. Calibre will tell the OS it can handle all the various books formats. It also registers the viewer and editor for formats they can handle. But, it doesn't register any of these as the default application only that they can handle these file types. When you try to open a book, unless you have already set a default application, the OS should still prompt you what to use. At that point you can choose which of the listed applications to open the book with and set if it is the default for future use. If the user makes the wrong choice, they can change this using the OS functions.

Except that calibre is not a book viewer. Calibre is an ebook management application. And it has a lot of related functions built into it. One of these is a book viewer. Another is an ebook editor. And there are other tools that can be used independently from the main ebook management application. Or through the main interface.


All of that means that yes, you can tell your OS to open books using the calibre viewer without opening the main calibre application. Just as you can do it for any other file type and application. If you don't know how to do this, searching for something like "set default application" for your OS should find instructions to follow.

Each forum has a description; the description for the main Calibre forum says: "Calibre is an open-source library manager". It does indeed do many other things as well but primarily it *is* a library manager.
