Borders UK axes Iliad

Quick snippet from yesterdays 'Independent' (UK) newspaper, full story here:-

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/bu...y-1650707.html

Interesting line in the last paragraph of the piece:-

Quote:
Amazon plans to launch its Kindle e-book device internationally, following the launch of the device in the US in 2007...
Poetic license, or do you think they know something we don't??

Cheers, Pete.

Given the fact that the iLiad is double the price of the Sony Reader, I'm not surprised to hear this.

Add that to this quote:

Quote:
A Borders UK spokeswoman said: "We are going to replace it with another e-reader which should be announced in the next few weeks."
Will the announcement be about a new reader or a new reader for Borders?

An existing reader, almost without doubt. It'll be interesting to see which one they go for. I'd guess it'll be either the Sony or the CyBook.

We also have some numbers about UK sales of the Reader:
Quote:
Waterstone's is far more bullish about the Reader. A spokesman said that between September and 3 January it had sold 30,000 Readers, and that more than 100,000 e-books have been downloaded from its website.

You may recall I posted a wee note up here a couple of weeks back that Borders UK was about to start selling ebooks from its website. Obviously dropping the Iliad and picking up on some other device is connected.

Well, iLiad is a niche within a niche. It brought this on itself.
