Ebook Readers Obsolete?
From a group who thinks that the people who wanted portable ebook readers already have them, so these are now obsolete. I had to laugh. This guy is big on his product which he believes is ideally a laptop.
"It's not another £300 device to lug around that readers want, nor is it another source of visually boring text documents opened in a word processor", she said, "It's a new type of book for the 21st Century with all the power and enjoyment of an ordinary book, but with full content, and the sensory experience taken to a new level." I mostly love this quote: "Portable devices already exist, and most people already have them, so why spend money on another gadget that is nothing more than an under - performing, over - priced, emasculated laptop?" There are less than 20 installations that may ever need a computer. At least that was the thinking of some people in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

This person writing the article pushing his 3D Book is a bit clueless. He has no idea what is going on in the real world. The reason we have our readers is because we don't want to be tied down to a laptop or computer.

Actually, from looking around the site, it doesn't seem to be a device but rather another ebook format with a bundled reader program (Windows-only at a guess). Can't actually find any info on the site, but it didn't ask me for an address when I tried to check out so I doubt it's anything physical.

It is a multi-media program wrapped around the book. With the ability to embed audio and video.

It seems that this company is working from the assumption that reading is a dull and painful pastime that requires colour, sound, movement and lord knows what else to bring it into the 21st century and to make it fun.
Reading is a pleasant quiet pastime that relaxes, entertains and educates. All I want to do is read my books. My rather vivid imagination provides all the sound colour and movement required. I think that books are a very good way of developing and stimulating our visualization ability. Last edited by HappyMartin; 10-17-2007 at 03:08 AM. Reason: spelling correction |

Totally agree, Martin. A well-written book can conjure in one's mind's eye scenes that no film maker can compete with.

Kindle is obsolete, Google Book Search is irrelevant. Yeah right.
Check out this press release... I couldn't help but spill the bourbon and coke in my hands when I read this.

ironically, a large portion of their target are the current e-readers. Yet, they manage to anger all of them with these remarks.

I'm not angered by it. I just think it's a very silly thing to say.

I suppose this means that the book is dead. Long live movies? I haven't looked at the product, but no thanks. I can imagine that this guy is one of the 70% of the population (Americans, I believe, as we read here last week) who hasn't even walked into a bookstore in the last five years. Just not enough titillation of the senses, I suppose.
