I've noticed that there has been a tendency in comics to make the origins of character more and more complex and confusing. In the early days of comics origins were fairly simple. As an example, with Batman, Superman, The Fantastic Four and Spider-Man originally their entire origin could be told in a page or two. Although elements might be added over time the basics of the origin have been kept fairly straight forward.

Now there has been a tendency to continually revise origins, replacing what has been previously established. What brought this to mind is a video I recently saw involving the origin of Donna Troy (the second Wonder Girl), which was so confusing to me that I could only watch about half of the video.

Donna Troy was a character that came about by mistake. When they put Wonder Girl in the original Teen Titans, the Creative Team didn't realize that the Wonder Girl who had previously appeared was actually Wonder Woman as a teenager (Wonder Woman used to have stories where she would have adventures with herself at various ages, including as a teenager and as a child). Due to this, for a time the existence of Wonder Girl wasn't explained.

They finally gave her an origin where she was an orphan found in a burning building by Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman took her to Paradise Island and she was raised by the Amazons. Eventually, they used their technology to give her powers like Wonder Woman and she went to Man's World to become Wonder Girl (with an outfit that was a teen version of Wonder Woman's).

This was a fairly simple origin that stood for a long time. Although they added to it (it turned out that Donna's birth mother was dying of cancer and she left her an an Orphanage because she couldn't care for her). However, subsequent events (such as having Wonder Woman debuting long after Wonder Girl made her debut) caused them to have to repeatedly change Donna's origin. Among the versions:
  • She was taken by the Titans of Myth and raised among other children taken by other worlds.
  • She was a magical duplicate of Diana created to give her a playmate who was kidnapped by an enemy of Hyppolyta, thinking she was Diana, and tortured via a cycle of tragic lives and deaths. In one of those lives she became Donna Troy.

Now, in the following posted YouTube video, they gave her a new origin:

Was Love Potion Number Nine the perfected version of a Love Potion? Could the previous eight version have various flaws that rendered them less than acceptable?

Possible issues with Potions 1 through 3:
  1. You fall in love with yourself.
  2. You fall in love with the last person you see.
  3. It creates an intense love...for 1 second, then intense lifelong hate.

It's not that the moon is falling, it's that the moon's aim is so bad it keeps missing the earth.

That's close to Douglas Adams wrote about flying.

I've been thinking about the characters Snow Miser and Heat Miser from the Christmas special The Year Without A Santa Claus. Their names seems to be the opposite of what they are, Snow Miser wants to share cold with everyone while Heat Miser want to share heat with everyone. That doesn't sound like something who is a miser for something would want to do.

Could it be that their names actually reflect what they are actually misers for. Snow Miser actually wants all of the heat which results in everything around him being cold (an object turns to snow in clutch because he absorbs all of its heat), while Heat Miser wants all of the cold which results in him causes everything about him being hot (objects melt in his clutch because he absorbs all of its cold).

It reminds me of the villain Killer Frost, originally an enemy of Firestorm. At first it seemed that hitting her with heat would be a way to defeat her, but instead it made her stronger. It turns out that her actual power is the ability to absorb heat, hitting her with a heat attack causes her to become stronger.

Ozymandias, king of kings, meet Sennacherib, king of the world.

About 700 years before the birth of Christ, the restless Assyrian listed his deeds on palace walls and artifacts.

"I led vast armies," Sennacherib writes. "I made the desert bloom and built splendid palaces in Nineveh. Best of all, when the king of Judea misbehaved, I stuck him in a birdcage for a while."

If time is a circle does that mean that a way to travel to the past is to increase the rate that you travel through time (going from 1 minute per minute to 10 years per minute) until you reach the end of time? Moving to the beginning of time, you keep moving forward until you reach your destination in the past.

A friend explains Time travel to all of us who know him, thus: You cannot travel to the future,as that is a time that has not yet happened, and will not happen until you arrive there; You cannot travel to the past, as (for example) if you travel to your tenth birthday, when it occured, you (as an adult) were simply not there, so it never happened/cannot happen!

Is it time to return to simplicity when it comes to listening to music? It seems that there are so many options for listening to music that it has become a bit overwhelming. Sometimes I miss the days when it was simple, you put a CD in your CD player, pressed "Play", and then enjoy.

Even something like Minidisc was very simple when it came to listening to music. Record the songs you want to a Minidisc (if you used an optical cable you didn't even have to set a recording level), put in the player, hit "Play", and enjoy. It was great for portable music.

The only slight issue was you had was to record the Minidisc in real time, but it was countered by Minidisc being a semi-permanent format. Unless you heat the Minidisc to a certain temperature the recordings are permanent and the recordings won't degrade with repeated playing. You record a Minidisc once and you're done. This is an improvement over the days of the compact cassette where you had to occasionally re-record a tape since the original recording would degrade with repeated playing.

Now, it seems that music has become much more of a job than it used to be. Maintaining a music library on your computer, verifying, correcting, and updating the metadata, and finally getting it on your listening device, is often a lot of work.

At times, I've considered returning to CD since it takes about 10 minutes to burn a CD-R (I can put about 6 hours of music on the disc [I burn at the highest sound quality]), put it in my player and enjoy my music. No syncing, no worrying about metadata (my player's just show a folder number and track number), and I can easily burn a report of the contents of the CD-R.

The fable of the fool

It is said that in a city, a group of people had fun with the village idiot, a poor wretch of little intelligence who lived on alms and by doing small errands.

Every day some men called the fool to the bar where they met and offered him a choice between 2 coins: a large one of $100 and a smaller one of $500. He always took the largest and least valuable, which was a source of laughter for everyone.

One day, someone who was watching the group having fun with the innocent man, called him aside and asked him if he still hadn't realized that the larger coin was worth less, and he replied: I know, I'm not that fool. It's worth 5 times less, but the day I choose the other one, the little game ends and I won't earn my coin anymore.

This story could end here, as a simple joke, but some conclusions can be drawn:

The first: he who seems a fool, is not always a fool.

The second: excessive ambition can end up cutting off your source of income.

And the most interesting conclusion is:

The truly intelligent man is the one who appears to be a fool, in front of a fool who thinks he is intelligent.
