Yes, the "under the mattress" system is looking better and better. At least until the government decides to "revalue" your money since the paper bills are really only markers for "cloud cash."

Better invest in trade goods for the upcoming cloudpocalypse.

I don't get cloud storage at all it's a step backwards to the days of terminals and mainframes and costs you money, battery and data charges for slower access nevermind the fact you could easily lose your files at any moment as megaupload proved.

the negatives far outweigh any positives in my opinion.

I'm guessing most people do not think this way.

If you rent a storage space with the same company that happens to rent a space to Walter White, Meth Lord, you don't expect the DEA to seize your stuff along with his or rummage through it looking for drug when you complain.

This is not new(s) to anyone here, but it is news because it is an actual case, hot hypothetical.

Most people aren't tech savy and since they don't see the potential perils they use cloud services because it is convenient. Me I use the cloud too but only for data that I can afford to loose. Anything valuable, not finacially but rather photos, videos that I can never get back I store on two separate USB disks.

Why all the doomsday prophecy? This case concerns an individual who uploaded his files to the cloud without keeping a local version. I am going to assume that most people who use cloud storage services like Dropbox and Google Drive use them as redundant backup services. Hell, even IMAP email is cloud-based.

The convenience and utility of the cloud is amazing. Nothing like it existed even five years ago. Its drawbacks are principally security-related, but only one poster has mentioned that aspect in 19 posts.

I do agree that is can be dangerous to totally rely on the cloud, but the cloud is convenient for many things.

In both my business and in my role as a volunteer for a non-profit, we use Google Drive to share documents and it works wonderfully for that.

Just a case of being aware that you could lose your cloud data at any time and making sure you have your own copies.

Even worse, your medical records, Xrays, tests are regularly outsourced often outside of the country.

<<It's unfortunate that you can lose rights by outsourcing the holding of your data; that would be like losing a right to your money because you held it at a bank rather than in a sealed baggy in your toilet tank. >>

"Cloud storage" and "rights" in the same sentence? Now that is a laugh, unless you are paying big bucks for them to store your data. When using free cloud storage you are actually paying WITH your data.

Are you claiming that anyone with common sense never rents storage space?
