Nvida sees iPad as a thing of the past

Kind of interesting take on Android. Kind of mirrors a conversation we had on the board some time ago about how Apple develops product vs Google.

Quote:
"The Android phone took only two and a half years to achieve the momentum that we're talking about. I would expect the same thing on Honeycomb tablets," Huang told the Reuters Technology Summit in New York on Monday.
….

APPLE VS THE WORLD
Apple tightly controls the design of its gadgets and the software that runs on them in order to deliver very specific experiences to its customers.
But Google gives away Android for free to manufacturers, who use it on their own smartphones and tablets.

"As a result of so many different parties working together, the first versions tend to be a bit clumsy to roll out. However, as is the nature of these organic industries with very, very large players, you have continuous improvement at a very rapid pace," Huang said.

"Everyone recognized the shortcomings of Honeycomb 3.0, jumped in working on Honeycomb 3.1, and if you haven't had a chance to play with it -- it's just delightful," he added.[sic]

We can say that Android will have won ONLY when it caused Apple sales to slow. At this point, Apple is still selling every single iDevice it makes and demand has not lessened any.

These CEO's are just spewing rhetoric.

I think we're getting close to the point where Android will start eating into Apple sales. Android has an awful lot of momentum, and it's still a fairly immature OS. If things stabilize at say 3.1, and Google delivers a quality product that works on both tablets and phones, it could put a real dent in Apple's sales.

The next few years will be interesting to watch.

Dell and HP haven't figured out to do it in the PC market...it will be interesting to see if Google can do it in the phone and tablet market.

I agree but its an IF, the problem with the devices (not the os) is every android manufacturer keeps promising the moon and showing all these fancy spec's but then dont deliver. it took 4 months before most of the promised features on my galaxy tab to work. the Motorola xoom promised an sd slot among other things... only to have the sd slot not work. you have ALOT of promising and fancy doodads comming out for android but few have lived up to thier hype.

One of the more successful android devices didnt promise the world (the nook color) In my opinion the other device manufacturers should follow Barnes & noble's lead. Stop selling spec's start selling actual funcionality!

That would be "Ice Cream Sandwich". 3.1 is still HoneyComb, ICS has yet to be numbered. 4.0 maybe?

Yes, that's what I was thinking of, thanks. 4.0 sounds good. It indicates a big upgrade and a clean break from the 3.x series.

specs are important too. people like to brag about the insides even when they don't understand them.

it's weird that in one breath the guy's scratching his head on why android tablets aren't selling but in the second breath says android tablets will outsell ipads.

Interesting point you are making, do you actually buy hardware without knowing the specs.

It's not so weird if you think about it. The guy is saying this, with many hands in the development of android the development will bout be fluid and consistent at first, but through the collaboration of many the best features and experience will be rapidly developed. Where in Apple's case they are only one company with complete control. So there startup time is fast, but over the ling haul they will get out paced.

It gives credence to two heads were better than one.

The success of Linux desktop is testament to this. It took a VERY long time (tens of years) for Linux to finally graduate to the desktop, but it has finally become a very viable contender, and that with a couple or 900 pound gorillas in the room.

In smart phones, Android has gone from ~10% to 36% over 1 year (source).

You'd expect them to do the same in tablets; we shall see in a year or two.

i always know the specs... and understand them. i do lots of research, but some things can't really be known until you use the product in the way you plan to.

i generally spend a week minimum before i buy product. that being said, i wonder why didn't see as many problems with the UK version of the tf as in the american version. ours must have been done in a big rush.
