The Lady and the Lawman by Joyce Brandon is the 1st in her Kincaid Family series of old school f/m historical western frontier romances set in Arizona in the 1880s, this one a suspenseful adventure dealing with social issues as the titular lady gets involved in thwarting the sadly period-accurate riots against Chinese immigrants (Wikipedia) in her small town with the help of the titular lawman who gets caught up in tracking down the murderer who killed the woman he loved who bore a startling resemblance to our heroine*, free courtesy of publisher Diversion Books, who are e-printing it from its 1987 Ballantine Books edition.

Description
Life on the Western frontier in the 1880s is filled with risks and danger—a fact Angie Logan quickly relearns upon arriving back at her family's Arizona ranch, home from college back East.

To help quell the riots against Chinese immigrants that have settled in Durango, Angie relies on her education and wits in appealing to the governor for assistance. The governor sends help in the form of Lance Kincaid, a charismatic gentleman who became a ranger to avenge the murder of the woman he loved.

While working to resolve the current upheaval, Lance catches the trail of the murderer. Nothing will stop him from catching the killer and bringing him to justice, except perhaps Angie, the mysterious woman who looks eerily like his lost love.

* Quite frankly, this kind of bodes ill for the relationship IMHO, what with the entire Replacement Goldfish thing and all (warning: that link goes to TV Tropes, where I will not consider myself responsible for the time you will lose link-hopping through the site).

But it's a romance so they're just kind of doomed to live happily ever after with the shadow of a near-identical murdered former flame looming over their love, I guess.
