i know, just not as big as others, sadly. sony has a large ereader, but it's based on a current tech (eink) not something that is, at best, at the prototype stage. Don't get me wrong, I also would love to get a reader with clearink

Update
I attended the IDTechEx Show, 12th of April 2018 in Berlin, and met Mr. Peruvemba, CMO of CLEARink. They still work very diligently to get to the next level. A week ago he saw the first devices out of the factory in China and they looked very encouraging. Last year they showed prototypes with color and 106 ppi. At end of May (in just 5 weeks) there will be the Display Week in L.A. . The goal is to show the next generation of prototypes with color and 227 ppi.
Here some pictures of the speech at the IDTechEx: |

The slide says 212ppi (still good enough). But 83% white state reflectance and 20:1 contrast would be amazing.
Let's hope they get it in production. |

This was the first question after the speech: The 212 ppi is relatated to the bistaple version (black and white, no animation). The Video platform / version had 106 ppi so far. But the next generation of the video version will have 227 ppi.
The same with 83 % white reflection. It is related to the bistable platform / version. This offers CLEARink the possibility to use colorfilters which usually reduces reflectance. Finally they get a very good reflectance rate even with color. BTW: E-ink (= bistable, black and white) just achieves reflectance of 45 %. Last edited by Matilo; 04-13-2018 at 04:24 PM. |

I've reading about Color Epaper for at least 10 years: Bridgestone, Eink Triton, Mirasol, LG, IRX Innovations, Liquavista...
Clearink himself takes years saying: "next year, we start mass production" When I see a color ereader in the mass market... I'll believe it. Meanwhile I think is vaporware, like grapheno by the way. |

This proves that developing new hardware is hard. But hey, CLEARink showed 2017 for the first time a device looking like an tablet / reader. This year they will reveal a new generation of prototypes. Step by step. CLEARink is on track.

Quote:
83% white reflectance means about 40% colour reflectance (assuming WRGB sub-pixels) |

c/p " CLEARink will be demoing some new technology at SID Display Week 2018 and the company is going to primarily focus on 1.32 inch displays for wearables and 9.7 inch screens for e-readers. The company has just managed to increase the resolution of their color screens from 106 DPI to 200 PPI due to a new color filter design. Currently CLEARink is still experimenting and trying to finalize their product. The VP Marketing Sri Peruvemba told me “We have conducted a few different trials in the LCD mass production factory in Asia. They manufactured TFT arrays, helped us put together the display cells (front plane with our TIR film plus electrophoretic ink with black particles and backplane TFT layer), we built the modules, we have been testing them, tweaking some of the parameters and each trial is producing better output. I know this sounds a bit vague but we monitor lots of different parameters and have many permutations and combinations that are yielding acceptable results so we keep optimizing for the select few that we can deploy in Wearables and eSchoolbook applications.” He went on to say “here is our thinking, we can pretty much design a display with any dpi that matches the underlying TFT but current market demand for eSchoolbooks is 157 PPI (to keep the cost low) and less than 200 PPI for Wearables, we will pretty much make the displays to suit the application/customer need (assuming of course large enough volume). We also see higher resolution applications including 300dpi or even higher and they will be more expensive and those applications would be willing to bear those costs but the applications we are targeting presently are looking for 200 PPI or less. This does not mean we won’t make higher PPI products to show capability to new customers but it will be a tradeoff between cost and resolution. This same principle as you know applies to any reflective display technology that uses TFT backplanes.” When SID DIsplay week wraps up Clearink will announce dates for development kits for people to purchase them, they plan to start with a small set not because of hardware availability but their team is small and can’t support lots of customer trials at the same time. The first set of kits and samples will go to customers that have pre-paid. " |

Three days ago CLEARink announced on its website that it has opened offices in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, and Shanwei, China.
“CLEARink’s team is excited to welcome its newest colleagues in Shanwei and Eindhoven. We have been able to attract the best and brightest from our competitors, while making great progress towards building a reflective display that will define a new industry standard”, said Frank Christiaens, CEO and Chairman, CLEARink Displays. “We are excited to announce the expansion in Eindhoven. Our new team has 100s of years of collective experience developing reflective displays at Philips, Samsung and Liquavista, and they will help us accelerate the development of CLEARink’s displays”, said Joel Pollack, Board Director at CLEARink Displays. CLEARink’s Shanwei office will be responsible for starting up manufacturing in China. The office is located in the manufacturing compound of CLEARink’s LCD manufacturing partner. There have been reports that Amazon is shutting down LiquaVista. It sounds like CLEARink's snapping up the newly available expertise.
It's already taken a lot longer than I expected to see a mass market video-capable low-power reflective device. Perhaps CLEARink will be the people to finally produce one. |

Some weeks ago at the IDTechEx in Berlin I spoke with a guy from eTulipa from the Netherlands. He also said that Amazon is shutting down Liquavista.
