Stefan Zweig
I've never heard of him before but watching Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel has me interested in reading Stefan Zweig.
Has anyone here read anything by him? Where should I start? |

Well, there is lots and lots of fine stuff to choose from.
For a short start in the area of fiction have a look at The Royal Game or Chess Story (Original: Schachnovelle; Buenos Aires, 1942). If you are more into biographies and texts on historical matters, try Joseph Fouché, 1929 (Original: Joseph Fouché. Bildnis eines politischen Menschen) or Mary, Queen of Scotland and the Isles or The Queen of Scots, 1935 (Original: Maria Stuart). |

The Literary Book Club read Chess Story a year ago; the discussion is here.
I'd recommend his autobiography, The World of Yesterday, which is particularly relevant this year for its depiction of pre-Great War Vienna. I'll add that when I was a girl I read and reread his Marie Antoinette. Take that for what it's worth! |

I second the suggestion of The World of Yesterday. I found it fascinating, and very moving.
